SALEM, Mass. --  Freshman Greg Shidler (Peabody, Mass.) netted four goals and an assist, while sophomore Ryan Gendreau (Danvers, Mass.) added a pair of markers and three assists to lead Salem State to an 11-7 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday evening at Alumni Field.

The host Vikings (3-3) raced out to a 6-0 advantage early in the second quarter and scored 10 of the first 11 goals of the contest to take a 10-1 lead at the break, as Shidler notched a hat trick in the opening 30 minutes of play and completed Salem State’s scoring with his fourth tally of the night just 4:51 after intermission.  The visiting Buccaneers (2-6) closed back to within eight at 11-3 entering the final 15 minutes of action, and Massachusetts Maritime netted all of the fourth quarter tallies, including a pair of markers off the stick of senior Craig Nichols (Marshfield, Mass.), to account for the final score.

Senior Brandon Cali (Leominster, Mass.) added a hat trick in the triumph for Salem State, which also received single goals off the sticks of senior Matt Pardee (Gloucester, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Savini (Wilmington, Mass.) as well as helpers from senior Robert Mulroy (Swampscott, Mass.) and junior Ryan Ostler (Billerica, Mass.).  Senior Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) joined Nichols with two goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received tallies off the sticks of seniors Ryan Linn (Bourne, Mass.) and Chris Davis (Cohasset, Mass.).  Junior Will Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) accounted for the other score of the evening for the Buccaneers, who also received an assist from sophomore James Burns (Duxbury, Mass.).

Senior Brendan Gill (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Salem State with 11 saves in the first 40-plus minutes of action, while junior Kyle Tuneburg (Beverly, Mass.) made six stops over the final 19-plus minutes.  Freshmen Jack Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) and Dan Bourque (Reading, Mass.) combined for seven saves in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Buccaneers outshot the Vikings by a 39-24 margin for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime opens Pilgrim League play on Saturday afternoon by heading to Norton, Mass. to take on Wheaton in a conference match at 1:00 p.m., while Salem State travels to Boston on Saturday afternoon to take on UMass Boston in a Little East match that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
