THROGGS NECK, N.Y. --  Senior Seth Collins (Owego. N.Y.) netted a pair of goals and an assist for three points to lead New York Maritime to a 7-5 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Third Annual Maritime Cup match played Saturday afternoon at Rheinhardt Field.

The host Privateers (1-5) jumped out to a 2-1 advantage after the first quarter of action and extended that margin to 5-1 at the break with three unanswered tallies in the second stanza off the sticks of Collins and freshman Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn.) that sandwiched a man-up marker from senior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y.), and after the visiting Buccaneers (1-2) closed back to within three at 5-2 on senior Craig Nichols’ (Marshfield, Mass.) goal two minutes following intermission, New York Maritime extended its lead to 7-2 on Collins’ second goal of the day just 2:34 later that was followed by Hanratty’s second man-up tally midway through the third quarter.  Massachusetts Maritime kept the hosts off the board for the remainder of the match, however, and used three unanswered goals in less than nine minutes in the final stanza, including a pair by senior Ryan Linn (Bourne, Mass.) to close back to within a pair with 3:35 remaining, but the visitors could get no closer than the final score.

Senior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y.) added goals in the triumph for New York Maritime, which also received a pair of assists from sophomore Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y.) and a single helper off the stick of senior Jesse deBoer (Ridge, N.Y.).  Senior Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) joined Linn with a pair of goals while adding an assist to finish with three points in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received an assist off the stick of senior Chris Davis (Cohasset, Mass.).

Senior Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for New York Maritime with a five-save effort, while freshman Jack Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) made a career-high 20 saves and notched his first career assist in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Privateers outshot the Buccaneers by a 44-13 margin for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Plymouth State in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m., while New York Maritime heads to Newburgh, N.Y. on Wednesday evening to take on Mount St. Mary in its Skyline Conference opener beginning at 7:00 p.m.
