FINAL:              NEWBURY 3, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 1

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Steven Broy (Gorham, Maine) rapped out a pair of hits as Newbury used a combined four-hitter from a quartet of pitchers to notch a 3-1 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The visiting Nighthawks (10-11) took advantage of a walk, an error and three wild pitches to plate all of the runs they would need in their first at-bat, as senior Cameron D’Agostino’s (Salisbury, Mass.) RBI groundout was followed by a wild pitch that enabled junior Ryan Zahornasky (Shelton, Conn.) to score what proved to be the deciding run.  Broy hit a double to left and scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by junior Craig Barnett (Narre Warren, Victoria, Australia), to close out the frame, as the host Buccaneers (7-6) plated their lone run in the bottom of the third when freshman Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) singled and scored on an error.  Massachusetts Maritime loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play and a groundout ended the threat.

D’Agostino and sophomore Ian Hruniak (Lutz, Fla.) added singles in the triumph for the Nighthawks, as freshman Jacob Pringle (Acushnet, Mass.) allowed two hits and an unearned run while fanning four over the first five innings to earn his first collegiate victory and even his mark at 1-1 on the season.  Sophomore Ethan Forrest (East Bridgewater, Mass.) retired the side with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to earn his first save for Newbury, which also received a combined three scoreless innings on the mound from seniors Lyndon Brundige (Rockland, Mass.) and Daniel Lumb (Stoneham, Mass.).

Seniors Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) and Greg Downs (Marshfield, Mass.), along with junior Kevin Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass.), joined Connor Kennedy with hits on the day for the Buccaneers, as senior Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) allowed one earned run in suffering the setback.  Junior Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) tossed 8 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Massachusetts Maritime, as he fanned three along the way.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Wentworth in a non-league outing on Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Newbury heads to Wenham, Mass. to take on Gordon on Thursday afternoon in a non-league contest that begins at 3:30 p.m.
