FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 10, JOHNSON & WALES 4

CRANSTON, R.I. --  Senior Greg Downs (Marshfield, Mass.) rapped out four hits and drove in four runs for the second time in his last four games, while freshman Logan Sullo (Dartmouth, Mass.) recorded his second four hit performance in a week to lift Massachusetts Maritime to a 10-4 non-league college baseball victory over Johnson & Wales Tuesday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Complex.

Downs staked the visiting Buccaneers (5-4) to a 2-0 lead in their opening at-bat with a two-out, two-run single before plating single tallies in the third on an RBI safety and again the fifth on a run-scoring double.  The host Wildcats (3-6) sliced their deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by sophomore Chris Baldwin (Pawtucket, R.I.) that was followed by a run-scoring single off the bat of junior Tom Elkow (Morganville, N.J.), and after Johnson & Wales closed to within a run in the sixth on sophomore Ivan Reyes’ (Cranston, R.I.) RBI double, Massachusetts Maritime extended its advantage to 6-3 in the seventh on sophomore Aidan Desrosiers’ (North Attleboro, Mass.) two-out, two-run single.  The visitors added three insurance tallies in the eighth on RBI singles by senior Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) and junior Everett Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) that were followed by run-scoring fielder’s choice from freshman Benjamin Crago (Falmouth, Mass.), and after the hosts received an RBI double off the bat of freshman Mike Davlos (New Milford, Conn.) in the bottom of the frame, the Buccaneers closed out the scoring on Rosano’s run-scoring fielder’s choice to notch their third win in the last four contests.

Sullo scored three runs to go with his four hits in the triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, as he and Downs combined for eight of the Buccaneers’ 14 hits on the afternoon.  Walsh and freshman Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) chipped in with two hits each for the visitors in support of junior Kevin Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass.), who scattered seven hits and struck out three over the first five innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the season.  Reyes, junior Mark Kerwin (Smithfield, R.I.) and sophomore Lou Umberto (Cranston, R.I.) each had two hits as part of a 13-hit attack on the day for Johnson & Wales, as junior Jake Marchesseault (Wyoming, R.I.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Wildcats, allowing five hits and three runs with fanning four over the first three frames to fall to 0-1 on the spring.

Massachusetts Maritime’s scheduled non-league home game with Coast Guard, which was to be played tomorrow afternoon, has already been postponed, and the Buccaneers are next scheduled to host Fitchburg State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Johnson & Wales hosts Bridgewater State in a non-league outing tomorrow afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Complex that begins at 3:30 p.m.
