FINAL:              MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 10, BECKER 4

NORTHBORO, Mass. --  Senior Greg Downs (Marshfield, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in four runs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 10-4 non-league college baseball victory over Becker Thursday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

The Buccaneers (3-3), playing for the first time in 18 days, overcame an early deficit by plating five runs in their first two at-bats.  The Hawks (7-4) jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in their first at-bat of the contest on a throwing error and a three-run homer to right center by sophomore Niko Bedell (Manorville, N.Y.), but Massachusetts Maritime responded with three tallies in the bottom of the frame on RBI doubles by Downs and freshman Logan Sullo (Dartmouth, Mass.) that were followed by an infield single by freshman Benjamin Crago (Falmouth, Mass.).  Downs gave the Buccaneers the lead for good with a two-run single in the bottom of the second, and Massachusetts Maritime tacked on single runs in the fifth on Crago’s sacrifice fly and in the sixth on a steal of home by senior Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) before icing its triumph eighth inning tallies that came on Downs sacrifice fly, a bases loaded walk to freshman William Keane (Braintree, Mass.) and a balk to account for the final score.

Sullo and Crago added two hits each as part of a 12-hit attack for the Buccaneers, as Rosano reached base five times and scored four runs for the winners.  Junior Kevin Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass.), the second of four Massachusetts Maritime pitchers on the day, picked up his second triumph of the season on the mound in allowing a hit and striking out five over three innings of work, while senior Zac Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) tossed a pair of scoreless final frames to earn his third save of the spring.

Senior Matthew Consigli (Whitinsville, Mass.) and sophomore Nick Harriman (Harrisville, R.I.) rapped out doubles as part of a four-hit attack for Becker, which saw its six-game winning streak come to an end.  Sophomore Mark Brousseau (Worcester, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Hawks, as he allowed five earned runs and fanned a pair over the first five innings of play.

Massachusetts Maritime returns to the New England Baseball Complex on Tuesday evening to take on Gordon in a non-league outing that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Becker heads to Rindge, N.H. on Saturday afternoon to host Elms in a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader beginning at Noon.
