Bucs Beaten by Bison in Home Opener

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers women's lacrosse team, coming off of a season-opening win on the road against Thomas College, hosted a tough Nichols College team in their home opener on Wednesday evening. The Bucs had an early lead in the game before the Bison grabbed momentum and left Buzzards Bay with the win, 16-3.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Freshman Karah Deveau led the Bucs in scoring with two goals. Fellow freshman Tessa Hinds scored once. 
  • Senior captain Allie Dickinson had two assists in the loss.
  • Senior captains Lindsy Durgin and Caleigh Tompkins picked up a team-high four ground balls. 
  • Durgin won a team-high four draw controls.
  • Defensively, Tompkins and Emma Dintino both caused a team-high three turnovers.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 20 ground balls, were successful on 15-of-25 clear, won six draw controls, and took 12 shots in the loss. 

Nichols

  • Hadley Houghton led all scorers with eight goals. Sienna Reeves scored three times in the win. Emma Patton and Kristen Ruby netted two goals each. Cali Melo added one score.
  • Houghton had a team-high two assists. Makala Dube, Kaelin Kula, Patton, Ruby, and Paige Alexander all had an assist.
  • Houghton picked up a game-high six ground balls and won a game-high 10 draw controls. 
  • Defensively, Houghton had a game-high six caused turnovers.
  • In total, Nichols picked up 19 ground balls, was successful on all 14 of their clear attempts, won 17 draw controls, and took 31 total shots in the game.

 

How It Happened

The Buccaneers scored first in the clash with the Bison on Wednesday and even took a two-goal lead midway through the first quarter. Deveau scored her first of the game with 8:01 left in the quarter and Hinds followed that with her lone goal at the 6:35 mark. Nichols scored quickly after the Hind's goal with 6:04 left in the quarter to cut the Maritime lead to one goal, 2-1. Then, with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter of play, Houghton scored her second to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.

To start the second quarter, Deveau gave the Bucs their second lead of the game on her second goal at 13:19 left in the half. That ended up being the final goal the Bucs scored in the game as the Bison went on to score six in the second to tie the game, take the lead and then extend that lead. Houghton scored three in the quarter, Patton scored twice, and Reeves scored her first of the game. Nichols led at the half, 8-3.

The Bison scored all of the goals in the second half, eight of them, with four in the third quarter and four in the fourth. Houghton added three goals to her stat line in the second half, Reeves and Ruby each scored once per quarter, and Melo scored her lone goal in the fourth. The Bison went on to win, 16-3, in the Bucs home opener

Maritime is on the road for their next game on Saturday, March 8th against Rhode Island College in Providence with a 1pm faceoff scheduled.
