Softball Sweeps Bulldogs in Road Doubleheader

FRANKLIN, Mass -- The Buccaneers traveled north on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader with the Dean College Bulldogs. It took a while for the Buc bats to come alive in both games but they pulled it out getting the sweep winning game one, 7-4, and game two, 11-7.

 

Game One

The Basics

Final: Buccaneers 7, Bulldogs 4

  • Liana Silva and Ari Amaral had two hits in the loss. Xandra Silva had one hit.

How It Happened

The Bucs opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning when Holler reached on an error and two runners, Ross and Booker, came in to score. In the bottom of the Inning, Dean scored two to tie the game. Amaral singled and drove in Ramos and Silva to make the score 2-2 after one.

The second through the fifth innings turned into a pitcher's duel and defensive battle between the teams with no runs scored. Then, in the sixth, Maritime broke the tie on a Burton RBI single to make the score 3-2 Bucs. In the bottom of the sixth, Silva doubled to tie the game again at 3-3.

In the top of the seventh, Butler came up to the plate in a pinch hit opportunity with Warren on base. Butler proceeded to triple and score Warren to put the Buccaneers up 4-3. Following Butler was Booker, who doubled to drive in Butler and extend the lead to two runs, 5-3. Then, Patane hit her second home run of the season, and her 100th career hit, to bring the score to 7-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Dean loaded the bases, and Splaine walked in a run to bring the score to 7-4. With the tying run at the plate, Catlett forced a ground ball back to herself, and Maritime proceeded to turn a 1-2-3-5-2 triple play to end the game and take the 7-4 win in game one.

  • Sydnee Ramos and Leah Chamberlain recorded three hits for the Bulldogs. Xandra Silva, Ari Amaral, and Emily Kilpatrick had one hit.
  • Amaral drove in two runs, and five other Bulldogs drove in one.
  • Ramos and Chamberlain scored twice. Silva, Silva, and Kilpatrick scored once.
  • Ramos and Chamberlain had doubles in the loss.

How It Happened

Maritime took another early lead in the first inning of game two on an RBI single by Booker, and Patane reached one an error. In the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs exploded for four runs to take a 4-2 lead after one inning.

In the bottom of the second, Dean extended their lead to three runs, 5-2, on a sacrifice fly by Silva.

The Bucs came back in the top of the third inning with a two-RBI single by Holler and a Burton sacrifice fly. The teams were tied after three innings, 5-5.

Dean took another lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ramos doubled in Kilpatrick and gave their team a 6-5 advantage.

Holler tied the game up at 6-6 for the Bucs in the top of the fifth on a double that scored Patane. In the bottom of the fifth, Dean, once again, took the lead, 7-6 on a Silva RBI single. 

In the top of the sixth, the Buccaneer bats were lively as they went on to score five runs. Kerecz scored on a Dean Miscue, Booker reached on a fielder's choice that scored Warren, Burton doubled in Patane and Booker, and Whitman reached on an error that brought in Burton. The Bucs held an 11-7 lead heading to the bottom of the inning. Klemp and the Maritime defense held off the Bulldogs in the bottom of the sixth and the game was called due to darkness with the Buccaneers earning the game two win, 11-7, and a sweep on the road over the Bulldogs.

 

What's Next

Maritime opens their conference slate on Saturday afternoon at Westfield State starting at 12pm.
