Bucs Sweep Cadets in Buzzards Bay

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- On Saturday, the Buccaneers softball team, riding a four-game winning streak, hosted the Norwich Cadets on Taylor's Points. The Buccaneers led wire-to-wire in game one winning 10-3. In game two, the Cadets gave the Buccaneers a run; Maritime came out on top by a 9-7 final.

Maritime

  • Reagan KereczKelsey Booker, and Ab'c'de Patane all had three hits. Kerecz's first hit of the game was her 100th career hit.
  • Hannah Burton recorded two hits in the game. Natalie GaleCamryn WhitmanRubi Butler, and Eva Warren all had one hit.
  • Booker hit her first home run of the season. Warren hit her first-career triple and Patane hit her first of the season. Booker had two doubles, and Gale and Whitman each had one double. 
  • Booker drove in four runs in the game. Kerecz, Patane, Burton, Whiteman, Butler, and Warren all drove in one run. 
  • Gale, Booker, and Patane all scored twice. Kerecz, Whitman, Butler, and Warren each scored once.

Norwich

  • Six Different Cadets had one hit each in the game. 
  • Madison DeCota drove in three runs on her first home run of the season. 
  • Hailey Williams, DeCota, and Brianna Vitale all scored once.

 

How It Happened

The Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game one and never looked back from there. They scored their first run on a Booker double that drove in Kerecz. 

In the bottom of the third, Booker doubled again to drive in Gale and give the Bucs a 2-0 advantage. Then, Patane singled down the right field line and brought in Booker to make the score 3-0.

Maritime added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Warren tripled to bring in Butler to score. Kerecz followed that up with a single bringing in Warren. The Bucs led 5-0 after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, DeCota homered for the visitors to make the score the score 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Whitman reached on a fielder's choice and Patane came in to score. Butler singled to bring in Whiteman shortly after and the Bucs went up 7-3.

The Bucs added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, two on Booker's first home run of the season and another on a Burton single to bring in Patane. The Buccaneers went up 10-3 and shutdown the Cadets in the top of the seventh to take the win in game two.

  • Munson, McGinn, and Kempf all drove in two runs. 
  • Williams scored twice and five other Cadets scored once. 
  • Hailey Williams had a triple and a double in the game. Maren McGinn had three doubles. Courtney Thomas, Kempf and Petrone all had a double. 
  • Decota and Petrone each had a stolen base.

 

How It Happened

Norwich took their first lead on the day in the top of the first inning of game two, 1-0. In the bottom of the first, the Bucs scored one run of their own to tie the game, 1-1, after one.

In the top of the second, Williams singled to bring in Petrone to give Norwich a 2-1 lead, their second lead of the game.

The Bucs tied the game once again in the bottom of the third on a Booker single and Ross came in to score on an error. Gale then doubled driving in Booker to give the Bucs their first lead of the game, 3-2. After Gale, Burton singled to score Gale and give Maritime a two-run, 4-2, advantage. 

After a scoreless fourth, the Cadets scored three in the top of the fifth to retake the lead, 5-4. The Buccaneers didn't go away as they scored five in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-5 lead late in the game.

Norwich scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to two runs, 9-7. Catlett and the Bucs shut down the Cadets the rest of the way to earn the 9-7 victory in game two and take the sweep on Saturday.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers are on the road against Albertus Magnus in Connecticut on Sunday. The doubleheader begins at 12pm.
