WORCESTER, Mass. --  Senior Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Melissa Beaudry (Worcester, Mass.) picked up pitching wins on the mound and combined to drive in seven runs at the plate in leading Worcester State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime on Saturday afternoon by scores of 10-1 in the opener and 18-0 in the nightcap in games played at Rockwood Park.

The host Lancers (25-9, 12-2 MASCAC) earned a share of the MASCAC regular season title with Westfield State but will be seeded second in the upcoming conference tournament after losing a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Owls.  Worcester State grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead in the opener on Mahoney’s sacrifice fly, but the visiting Buccaneers (1-23, 0-14 MASCAC) evened matters in the third when freshman Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) tripled and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of freshman Jaclyn Labrecque (Sutton, Mass.).  The Lancers regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame, including a go-ahead two-run single by Mahoney, and iced their opening triumph with six fourth inning tallies, including a two-run single off the bat of freshman Carolyn Hassett (Charlton, Mass.), to close out the scoring.

Mahoney scattered five hits and fanned nine to improve to 13-2 inside the circle for Worcester State, which received two hits from sophomore Aimee Lamoureux (East Brookfield, Mass.) in the opener.  Sherman rapped out two of Massachusetts Maritime’s five hits in the lid-lifter, as the Buccaneers also received singles from junior Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.) and sophomores Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.) and Sarah Click (Buzzards Bay, Mass.).  Labrecque allowed just three earned runs and fanned one in suffering the setback on the mound for the visitors.

Worcester State grabbed a 5-0 lead in its first at-bat of the nightcap, as freshman Hillary Hart’s (Clinton, Mass.) three-run homer gave Beaudry all of the support she would need.  The Lancers added six more tallies in the second and five in the third before tacking on a pair of fourth inning runs to account for the scoring, as Beaudry helped her own cause with a double and four RBI to improve to 2-1 on the season with three strikeouts in three innings of work.  Hart and Lamoureux each added three hits in the nightcap triumph for the hosts, while junior Lauren Besozzi (Milford, Mass.) and sophomore Kylene Pease (Ashland, Mass.) each collected two hits as part of a 17-hit Worcester State attack.  Labrecque, who worked the first two frames to suffer the setback inside the circle for Massachusetts Maritime, combined with Johnson for a pair of singles in the nightcap for the Buccaneers.

Worcester State will host either Framingham State, Salem State or Bridgewater State in opening round play of the 2011 MASCAC Championships on Thursday afternoon at Rockwood Park.
