FINAL: FISHER 3, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 2
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Freshman Kelvin Guzman (Santo Domingo, Dom. Rep.) scattered four hits and struck out 11 over eight-plus innings of work on the mound to lead Fisher to a 3-2 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.
The visiting Falcons (23-16) scored all of their runs in their first at-bat, as a two-run double by senior Kyle Anulao (Peoria, Ariz.) plated the first two tallies and junior Angel Perez Vargas’s (Dorado, P.R.) RBI single provided what would prove to be the winning run. The host Buccaneers (7-8) crept back to within one in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by freshman Jackson Simone (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Kevin Troy (Braintree, Mass.), and Massachusetts Maritime had the tying run at second base in both the eighth and ninth innings but was unable to even matters.
Anulao and freshman Sami Bibovic (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each had two of Fisher’s six hits on the day, as after erupting for four hits in the opening frame, the Falcons were held two just two hits for the remainder of the afternoon. Guzman overcame four walks and three hit batsman to notch his second win of the season for the visitors, as junior Kevin Bongiovanni (Queens, N.Y.) preserved the triumph by getting the final three outs to pick up his first save. Troy accounted for half of the hosts’ four hits for the contest, as freshman Philip Holler (Hingham, Mass.) allowed all three first inning runs to suffer the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Fisher heads to Newton, Mass. on Thursday evening to square off with Lasell in a non-league outing that begins at 7:00 p.m.
