Sullo Repeats As ABCA, NEIBA All-Region Honoree; Joins Kennedy On D3Baseball.com All-Regional Squad

The accolades continue to come in for Massachusetts Maritime sophomore catcher Logan Sullo, as he was named to both the American Baseball Coaches Association All-New England Region and New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-New England squads for a second straight season on Tuesday evening.

A native of Acushnet, Mass. and a graduate of Bishop Stang High School, Sullo garnered second team honors on both teams after repeating as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year once again this spring.  Logan batted .419 with nine doubles, four triples, seven homers and 30 RBI while starting all 40 games for the Buccaneers, as he amassed 90 total bases while posting a .726 slugging percentage and a .528 on-base percentage.  Sullo paced Massachusetts Maritime in nine total offensive categories, and he ranked among the top 30 in NCAA Division III play nationally for most of the season in both slugging percentage and on-base percentage.

In two seasons in a Buccaneer uniform, Sullo has rapped out 85 hits (36 for extra bases) and driven in 48 runs while batting .429 and recording a .753 slugging percentage.  He has also notched a .533 career on-base percentage that includes 35 walks, and Logan has reached base in 136 of his 256 total plate appearances.  Sullo becomes the program’s fifth two-time all-New England performer, joining Massachusetts Maritime Hall of Famers Mark Boretti, John Whorf, Tim Quinn and Peter DiCecco in that exclusive club.

Sullo and senior pitcher Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) were also named to the D3Baseball.com All-New England Region team announced on Monday afternoon, as Sullo was the first team catcher on this year’s squad and Kennedy was tabbed to the third team as a reliever.  In 22 total appearances this spring, Kennedy notched a 5-1 mark with a 1.83 earned run average and five saves, including all three of Massachusetts Maritime’s wins during the MASCAC championships.  Kyle, a two-time selection as MASCAC Pitcher of the Week during the season, struck out 49 batters in 44 1/3 innings pitcher and held opponents to a .214 batting average, as he also earned a save in the Buccaneers’ 8-6 ECAC New England quarterfinal round triumph over Brandeis on May 12th.  In 65 career games, Kennedy posted a 15-6 mark with a 1.89 ERA and 12 saves, as he averaged 8.13 strikeouts (146 total) per nine innings pitched.

Massachusetts Maritime posted the third highest single-season win total in school history under first-year Head Coach Mike Kelley in 2016, as the Buccaneers finished the year at 24-16 overall and advanced to their first-ever appearance in the MASCAC championship round before falling to eventual champion Salem State.  Kelley’s crew also made its second straight trip to the ECAC New England semifinals, as Massachusetts Maritime fell to eventual title winner MIT after topping Brandeis in quarterfinal round action.
