Sullo Repeats As MASCAC Baseball Player Of The Year, Buccaneers Place Four On 2016 All-Conference Squad

Massachusetts Maritime sophomore catcher Logan Sullo was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Year for a second straight season earlier today, and he heads a quartet of Buccaneers that earned all-league accolades for their performances this spring.

Sullo, a native of Acushnet, Mass. and a graduate of Bishop Stang High School, posted a .429 batting average during regular season play for Head Coach Mike Kelley’s squad, rapping out seven doubles, four triples and five home runs while driving in 25 runs.  In addition to leading the conference in batting average, Logan also recorded a league-best .531 on-base percentage and .735 slugging percentage, as he has amassed 72 total bases along the way.  Sullo, who also earned all-New England and ABCA all-regional honors as a freshman in 2015, is the only player in Massachusetts Maritime history to earn MASCAC Player of the Year honors, as last spring he became just the third Buccaneer to cop the conference’s Rookie of the Year award.

Three of Sullo’s teammates were also named to the 2016 MASCAC all-conference team, as sophomore outfielder Connor Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass./Pope John Paul II) also earned a spot on the first team all-league squad after batting .384 with 12 extra-base hits (including 10 doubles) and 20 RBI.  Kennedy, who like Sullo was selected as the MASCAC Player of the Week on two occasions this spring, posted a .483 on-base percentage and a .577 slugging percentage in 31 regular season contests, as he ranked second in the conference in batting average and fourth in slugging percentage.

Senior pitcher Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) and junior second baseman Jake Petruzzelli (Abington, Mass./South Shore Voke) were tabbed to this year’s second-team all-MASCAC squad, as Kennedy earned all-league accolades for a third straight season after recording a pair of wins and four saves to go with a 1.44 earned run average in regular season action.  Kennedy, who has made 16 total appearances to date, has struck out 35 (10.05 per nine innings) in 31 1/3 innings of work while holding opponents to a .212 batting average.  Kyle was named as the MASCAC Pitcher of the Week on April 11th and earned a spot on the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week the following day, as he ranked in the top 10 in earned average nationally in Division III play during the first six weeks of the season.

Petruzzelli batted a career-high .343 in 31 games during regular season action for Massachusetts Maritime with eight doubles and 15 RBI, as he notched 10 multi-hit contests that included a three-hit performance on April 25th against Fisher.  Petruzzelli ranks behind only Sullo and Connor Kennedy on the Buccaneer hit parade this spring, and his eight doubles tie him for second on the squad in that category.

Kelley’s squad concluded regular season play by posting the 11th 20-win season in program history (the first since 2008), as the Buccaneers finished second in the final MASCAC standings with an 11-3 conference slate.  Massachusetts Maritime is making its third appearance in the last four seasons in the league championships (and 11th post-season appearance overall), as Kelley’s crew will open this year’s tournament on Friday afternoon by hosting either Fitchburg State or Framingham State in second round action at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT.
