Avery Earns Second MASCAC Pitcher Of The Week Honor This Season Following Four-Hit Shutout Of Westfield State
Massachusetts Maritime junior right hander Daniel Avery was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season on Monday afternoon for his efforts in the Buccaneers’ 1-0 victory over Westfield State last Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.
Avery, a native of Milford, Mass. and a graduate of Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, tossed a complete-game four-hitter and struck out nine in the regular season finale for Massachusetts Maritime, as he improved to a perfect 4-0 in MASCAC play with the decision. In 11 overall appearances (seven starts) on the season, Daniel has posted a 5-1 mark with a 3.71 earned run average while striking out 51 in 43 2/3 innings of work (10.51 per nine innings). He has held opponents to a .248 batting average while posting a pair of shutouts and a save along the way.
Avery was also honored as the MASCAC Pitcher of the Week on April 18th following a complete-game two-hit shutout that included six strikeouts in the Buccaneers’ 1-0 victory at league regular season champion Salem State on April 16th. In conference games only, he ranks second in the league in wins (4) and fifth in strikeouts (27).
Massachusetts Maritime posted the 11th 20-win season in school history (and first in eight years) under the guidance of first-year Head Coach Mike Kelley during regular season play, including an 11-3 slate in conference action. The Buccaneers finished second in the final league standings and will host either third-seeded Fitchburg State or sixth-seeded Framingham State in second round play of the 2016 MASCAC Championships on Friday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT.
