FINAL:              WESTFIELD STATE 5, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 2

WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Junior Sarah Sypek (Westhampton, Mass.) and sophomore Kelsey Murray (Hanson, Mass.) each scored a pair of goals to lead Westfield State to a 5-2 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Murray staked the host Owls (6-5, 2-1 MASCAC) to a 1-0 advantage at the break when she converted a feed from sophomore Emily Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) in the 28th minute, and Sypek extended that margin to 2-0 4:41 after intermission off a corner kick from junior Amanda Grant (Westfield, Mass.).  Murray collected her second marker of the day just over two minutes later on feeds from Carroll and junior Colie Sambrook (Naugatuck, Conn.), but sophomore Asia Vernon (Dutch Harbor, Ak.) sliced the visiting Buccaneers’ (3-4-2, 0-3 MASCAC) deficit back to two with her first collegiate goal in the 56th minute.  Sypek and Grant hooked up again on Westfield State’s fourth tally in the 71st minute, and freshman Jackie Grasso (East Bridgewater, Mass.) closed out the Owls’ scoring just 2:25 later on a feed from junior Ashleigh Chretien (North Attleboro, Mass.).  Senior Lauren Salem (Westfield, Mass.) accounted for the other Massachusetts Maritime marker of the day, an unassisted goal in the 77th minute and her seventh of the season, to account for the final margin.

Senior Jess Habif (Natick, Mass.) picked up her fifth win in goal without having to make a save in the first 52-plus minutes of play for Westfield State, while sophomore Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) made a career-high 27 saves, including a penalty kick stop, in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Owls had 33 of the 35 shots on goal for the contest, with the Buccaneers scoring on both of their opportunities.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Pine Manor in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Westfield State will be idle until next Saturday, October 12th when the Owls travel to Salem, Mass. to take on Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match that begins at 1:00 p.m.
