Women’s Lacrosse Sunk by Owls at Home

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Buccaneer women's lacrosse hosted Westfield State in a matinee game at Clean Harbors Stadium on Thursday. Westfield, the second place team in the MASCAC coming in to the day, held the Buccaneers to six goals, picking up their seventh win of the season, 15-6.

Inside The Numbers

For The Bucs

  • Senior captain Anna Deely (Barnstable, Mass) scored a team-high three goals, won a game-high seven draw controls, picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover in the loss. With one game left to play, Deely currently sits at 97 career goals.
  • Senior captain Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass), junior captain Alyssa DiScipio (Braintree, Mass) and freshman Ally Reddish (Canton, Mass) each scored a goal for the Bucs. Reddish's goal was the first of her career. DiScipio is currently at 99 career points (goals + assists).
  • DiScipio, Nora McLaughlin (Quincy, Mass), and Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass) each had an assist.
  • Sullivan, Amanda Gould (Buzzards Bay, Mass), and sophomore Sue Bird (Duxbury, Mass) all caused two turnovers.
  • Goalie Aviva Beringhause (Providence, R.I.) made 13 saves and allowed 15 goals. She also picked up a game-high five ground balls.

 

For The Owls

  • Sam Donohoe scored a game-high six goals in the Owls win. She also had an assist, picked up three ground balls, won three draw controls and caused two turnovers.
  • Cassidy Harvey and Nicole Rinkus scored three goals apiece for the Owls. Harvey also had a game-high four assists.
  • Cassidy Connolly scored twice, Natalie DeMaio scored once to round out the Owl scoring. Connolly added two assists.
  • Five other Westfield State players had an assist in the game.
  • DeMaio scooped up four of the teams 23 ground balls in the win and caused a game-high three turnovers.
  • Between the pipes, freshman Kara Banagan picked up her fifth win of the season making two saves and allowing four goals in 30 minutes of work. Lily Sears relieves Banagan at the half allowing two goals and making five saves.

 

How It Happened

  • Westfield scored four unanswered goals to open the scoring in the game. The first came four minutes in, the fourth goal of the run came with 18 minutes left in the first half.
  • Deely put the Bucs on the board after 16 minutes of play.
  • Donohoe and Reddish exchanged goals over the next two minutes.
  • With 10 minutes left before the break Westfield led, 5-2.
  • At the 6:30 mark, Westfield started a three-goal run, Harvey scoring with 6:24 left in the half, followed by Donohoe netting two man-up goals in a 33-second span.
  • Down 8-2, Maritime scored two goals, from Deely and DiScipio, in 24 second to cut the lead in half heading in to the break.
  • In the second half, the Owls went on another run, this time five goals, over a 12-minute span to extend their lead to nine goals, 13-4. In the middle of it, Donohoe scored her six goal of the game. She sits at 98 career goals after today's game.
  • In another set of quick-hit goals from the Bucs, the combo of Sullivan and Deely scored two goals in 19 second to make it 13-6.
  • Deely's goal at 9:06 would prove to be the final one of the game for Maritime.
  • Westfield went on to score two more goals, from Rinkus and Harvey, to make the score the final score, 15-6.

 

What's Next?

The Buccaneers will host Fitchburg State in their final game of the 2021 season on Friday, April 30th at 5pm. Prior to the game the Bucs will honor their four seniors who will graduate this June. Join us at 4:45 to hear and see the senior day ceremony.
