Women’s Lax Loses Season Opener to Bears

BRIDGEWATER, Mass – The Buccaneer women's lacrosse team opened their season Thursday evening on the road against Bridgewater State. At the end of the night, the Bears for the best of the Bucs, 17-10.

For The Bucs

  • Senior Captain Anna Deely (Barnstable, Mass), junior Captain Alyssa DiScipio (Braintree, Mass) and freshman Cassie Llewellyn (Fairfield, Conn) each scored a team-high three goals for Maritime.
  • Senior Captain Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass) scored the tenth goal for the visitors.
  • DiScipio tallied a game-high three assists with Sophomore Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass) adding two assists.
  • Defensively, Llewellyn, sophomore Grace Calvert (Windsor, Mass) and freshman Ally Reddish (Canton, Mass) each caused two turnovers.
  • In goal, starting goalkeeper Aviva Beringhause (Providence, R.I.), who picked up the loss, made five saves in goal while allowing seven goals. Laura Kleber (Westport, Mass) also made five saves in 20 minutes of play. Freshman Celia Del Rosso (Hingham, Mass) made four saves in 10 minutes on the field.

 

For The Bears

  • Emily Hiller led all scorers with nine goals for Bridgewater.
  • Savannah Herington and Katherine Tracey each scored twice.
  • Four others scored once for the hosts.
  • Six players recorded assists in the game.
  • Defensively, Herrington caused six turnovers to lead all players.
  • In goal, Olivia Kerrigan picked up her first win of the season making five saves.

 

How It Happened

Bridgewater scored early, one and a half minutes in, from the stick of Lily Carson. Two minutes later Llewellyn scored her first collegiate goal to bring the game to 1-1. Over the next two minutes, the teams exchanged goals as Hiller scored her first of nine and DiScipio scored her first of three. With six minutes gone in the first half the game was knotted at 2-2. Bridgewater proceeded to go on a 3-0 run over the next 10 minutes. Their third lead of the game was a 5-2 advantage of the Bucs. Maritime answered with a three-goal run of their own getting goals from Llewellyn, DiScipio and Sullivan. With three minutes to play before the halftime break the teams were tied at 5 apiece. In the final two minutes, Herrington scored her two goals of the night to give the Bears a 7-5 lead headed in to the break.

To start the second half, Deely scored her first of the game under a minute in to the second 30. Bridgewater answered with two goals to extend their lead to three goals. The two-goal run led to a Bucs goal from Deely, her second, which was followed by a three-goal run for Bridgewater. With 18 and a half left in regulation, the Bears lead by five, 12-7. DiScipio was the next to score, her third and final goal of the game from a free position shot. It was the lone free position shot that the Bucs scored from on the night. Under ten minutes left in the game, Bridgewater held a 12-7 advantage. The Bears would go on to score five more goals, three from Hiller. In the meantime the Bucs scored two of their own, including the final goal of the game from the stick of Deely with 30 seconds remaining. After those final 30 seconds ticked off the clock, the Bucs had fallen to the Bears 17-10.

The Buccaneers will take the field again next Thursday, April 15th at 5pm against Framingham State.
