NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Senior Zach Poh’s (Bridgewater, Mass.) runner-up finish in the discus highlighted another solid day of competition for the Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men placed 11th and the Buccaneer women finish 12th in a field of 17 schools at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic.

 

Poh qualified for the Division III New England championships with a mark of 42.59 meters (139 feet, 9 inches), and he added an eighth place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 35.17 meters (115 feet, 5 inches).  Senior Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) tied his own school record in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.99 that was good for seventh place, and he also helped the Buccaneer 4 x 100 meter relay take top honors in the event with a time of 45.59 in teaming with senior Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.), sophomore Garrett Loughry (Edgewater, Fla.) and freshman Ian Chester (Rockland, Mass.).  Hill, Mbengam, Loughry and sophomore Luke Kurelja (Bloomsburg, Pa.) also shined in the 4 x 400 meter relay, as the quartet finished seventh with a time of 3:54.68.  Bridgewater State took top honors in the men’s competition with a team score of 118 points, while Bentley (106.50) and Rhode Island College (77) finished in the respective runner-up and third place positions.

 

Freshman Jessica Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) set a school record in the women’s shot put with a fourth place mark of 10.53 meters (34 feet, 6 ¾ inches), while sophomore Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) also recorded a fourth place finish in the javelin for Massachusetts Maritime with a mark of 30.69 meters (100 feet, 8 inches).  Freshman Malina Dang (Midlothian, Va.) set a school record as well in the discus for the Buccaneers, posting a mark of 29.18 meters (95 feet, 9 inches) that was good for seventh place.  Bridgewater State also claimed the women’s team title with a score of 143 points, while host UMass Dartmouth (100) and Rhode Island College (74 points) finished in second and third place, respectively.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to New London, Conn. next Saturday morning to compete at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational that begins at 10:00 a.m.
