MANSFIELD, Conn. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team recorded a total of 28 top 10 individual performances during a highly successful day of competition at the Eastern Connecticut Invitational on Friday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men placed third overall while the Buccaneer women finished fourth in the final team standings.

 

Senior Zach Poh (Bridgewater, Mass.) enjoyed a successful day on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he took top honors in the discus with a meet record mark of 43.90 meters (144 feet) that qualified for both the New England Division III and ECAC Division III championships.  Poh also recorded second place performances in both the hammer throw (36.75 meters/120 feet, 7 inches) and javelin (42.31 meters/138 feet, 10 inches) while adding a seventh place finish in the shot put (11.45 meters/37 feet, 6 ¾ inches).

 

Sophomore Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) broke her own school records in both the 100 and 400 meter high hurdles, as she won the 400 with a time of 1:17.11 and placed third in the 100 with a time of 17.63.  Senior E.J. Bennett (East Wareham, Mass.) set a meet record and tied the school mark in the high jump with a winning mark of 1.93 meters, while junior Bryce MacAndrew (Warwick, R.I.) took top honors in the hammer throw with a mark of 38.39 meters.

 

Freshman Kevin O’Leary (Norton, Mass.) posted a second place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 12.03 meters (39 feet, 5 ¾ inches), and he added a school record mark in the long jump (6.26 meters/20 feet, 6 ½ inches) that was good for seventh place for the Buccaneers.  Senior Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) recorded a pair of third place finishes in the 110 and 400 meter high hurdles as well with respective times of 17.06 and 59.24, while sophomore Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) placed third in the javelin with a mark of 30.34 meters (99 feet, 6 inches).

 

Freshmen Jessica Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) recorded a trio of fourth place finishes in the shot put (10.25 meters/33 feet, ¾ inch), hammer throw (30.98 meters/101 feet, 8 inches) and javelin (29.52 meters/96 feet, 10 inches) for Massachusetts Maritime, while freshman Joseph Carey (Pembroke, Mass.) added two fourth place performances in the 110 meter high hurdles (17.54) and javelin (40.30 meters/132 feet, 3 inches).  Freshman Alan Provost (Monson, Mass.) finished fourth in the triple jump (11.54 meters/37 feet, 10 ½ inches) and added a sixth place performance in the 400 meters (55.90) on the day, while freshman Ian Chester (Rockland, Mass.) was fifth in the triple jump (11.48 meters/37 feet, 8 inches) and sixth in the 110 meter high hurdles (18.82).

 

Senior Cody Carneiro (Wrentham, Mass.) finished sixth in the javelin (38.70 meters/127 feet) for the Buccaneers, who also received an eighth place finish in the 1,500 meters (4:35.78) from freshman Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.).  Senior Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) and sophomore Tyler Aldrich (Mashpee, Mass.) recorded respective ninth place performances in the 100 meters (11.73) and 1,500 meters (4:40.94), while sophomore Andrew Gulino (Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Joe Eastman (Hanover, Mass.) added respective 10th place finishes in the 800 (2:23.20) and 400 meters (58.24).  Additionally, the 4 x 400 relay tandem of Bennett, Hill, Chester and sophomore Garrett Loughry (Edgewater, Fla.) posted a fourth place time of 44.67 in the event.

 

Bridgewater State captured both team titles to edge host Eastern Connecticut in the competition, as the Bears posted a score of 250 points on the men’s side to top the Warriors’ 154 points and Massachusetts Maritime’s mark of 94 points.  Bridgewater State won the women’s team crown by a mark of 229-172, with Post (61) finishing in third place.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Fitchburg, Mass. next Saturday morning (April 25th) to compete for the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference titles at the New England Alliance Championships hosted by Fitchburg State beginning at 11:00 a.m.
