FITCHBURG, Mass. --  Freshman Tori Cyrus (Everett, Mass.) rapped out four hits and drove in five runs to lead Fitchburg State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 9-0 in the opener and 11-0 in the nightcap in five inning games played Sunday afternoon at Coolidge Park.

Cyrus lined a two-run double to give the host Falcons (11-13, 3-3 MASCAC) all the runs they would need in their first at-bat of the lid-lifter, as Fitchburg State broke things open with a five-run second inning rally.  Sophomore Amanda Whitelaw (Flemington, N.J.) and freshman Marissa Gemma (Leominster, Mass.) each added two hits and an RBI as part of a 10-hit attack in the opener for the hosts in support of sophomore Brittany Whiting (Sharon, Mass.), who scattered two hits and fanned five to pick up her fifth win of the season on the mound.  Senior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) and freshman Taylor Winkler (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded safeties in the opening game setback for the visiting Buccaneers (0-12, 0-6 MASCAC), as Beaulieu went the distance inside the circle.

The Falcons took a 2-0 first inning advantage in the nightcap on an RBI groundout by Cyrus and a run-scoring single off the bat of sophomore Colleen Flaherty (Stoughton, Mass.), and after extending that margin to 5-0 in the second, Fitchburg State iced its triumph and completed the sweep with a six-run fourth inning outburst keyed by RBI singles from Cyrus, Flaherty and junior Katelyn Fitzgerald (Fitchburg, Mass.).  Cyrus, Flaherty, juniors Ashley Forgues (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Marissa Binnall (Fitchburg, Mass.) and freshman Erin Martin (Douglas, Mass.) each rapped out two hits as part of a 14-hit attack for the hosts in the nightcap, as junior Kerry Alcott (Groton, Mass.) allowed four hits and struck out seven to earn her sixth victory inside the circle.  Winkler and fellow freshmen Cassie Swanson (Quincy, Mass.), Brittany Driscoll (Spencer, Mass.) and Ashley Michalski (Portsmouth, R.I.) each recorded singles in the nightcap setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as Swanson went the distance on the mound for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at Noon, while Fitchburg State entertains Framingham State in a MASCAC twinbill on Monday afternoon at Coolidge Park that also begins at Noon.
