Cross Country Takes First in Travis Fuller Invitational

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- After a year hiatus in 2020, the Buccaneer men's and women's cross country teams hosted the 16th Travis J. Fuller Invitational on the Cape Cod Canal trail on Friday afternoon. Run in the memory of former Buccaneer Travis Fuller, who tragically died in a helicopted crash in 2005 while serving in the Military, the Buccaneers always perform strongly on the men's and women's sides. This time, both teams took home first place in their respective races. 

In the women's race, Samantha Molinari of Rivier University, took home the gold with her second consecutive victory in the race. The Buccaneers claimed the next eight spots in the race with captain Lily Hakkarainen (Chesterfield, N.H.) finished second with a time of 21:09 and captain Sarah Smialek (Dartmouth, MA) finishing third with a time of 21:29, two minutes faster than her time in the race two years ago. Alyssa Greico (Andover, MA) finished fourth at 22:00. Stella Strano (East Sandwich, MA) rounded out the top five in the race with a time of 22:04. Captain Camryn Boyce (Whitman, MA) finished sixth at 22:07. 

On the men's side, junior Lukas Janulaitis (Centerville, MA) finished first for the Bucs with a time of 29:40. Captain Ben Tuttle (Barre, MA) finished second with a time of 30:38. In the men's race, the Riverview School, a school in Bourne for students with learning disabilities, participated in the race and were very competitive. Jon Dion of the Riverview School finished in third in the men's race wit ha time of 32:07 in the 8k trek while his teammate Ricky Gladu finished in fifth with a time of 33:58. Steven Westgate (Taunton, MA) rounded out the top three runners for the Bucs with a time of 34:06. 

The Buccaneer will be off next week and then travel to Westfield State for the James Earley Invitational at Stanley Park in Westfield, MA on Saturday, October 9th.
