BOSTON, Mass. --  Senior Adam Vieira (New Bedford, Mass.) netted a pair of goals, while fellow senior Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made seven saves to record his third shutout of the season to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-0 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Wentworth Wednesday evening at Sweeney Field.

Junior Asa Mills (Westport, Mass.) gave the host Buccaneers (3-0-1), who are off to their best start in Head Coach Greg Perry’s 20-year tenure, the only goal they would need with just over five minutes remaining in the opening half, as he converted a scramble in front off a corner kick for his first tally of the season.  Vieira extended the Buccaneers’ advantage to 2-0 just 4:49 after intermission when he converted fellow senior Tim McDonough’s (Framingham, Mass.) throw-in, and he provided the final score of the evening with 6:12 remaining in the contest after converting a crossing pass from junior Hieu Nguyen (Weymouth, Mass.) for his second marker of both the night and season.

Young made four stops in the final 45 minutes of action to record his fifth career shutout for Massachusetts Maritime, while senior John Longo (Needham, Mass.) also made seven saves in net in the setback for the host Leopards (0-4-1), as the Buccaneers outshot Wentworth by a 19-17 margin for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Westfield State in its Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at Noon, while Wentworth hosts Eastern Nazarene in its Commonwealth Coast Conference lid-lifter on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
