BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Derek Young’s (Falmouth, Mass.) penalty kick conversion in the 24th minute of play held up as the game-winner and backed a five-save effort in goal from fellow senior Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) to lift Massachusetts Maritime to a 1-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
After a foul in the penalty area, Derek Young converted his attempt to the right of the cage to give the host Buccaneers (6-3-1, 1-2 MASCAC) the only marker they would need, and Brett Young made that hold up with three second half stops to record his fifth shutout victory of the season and sixth of his career for Massachusetts Maritime, which is off to its best 10-match start in school history.
Sophomore Aidan Hanratty (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made six stops in net in the setback for the visiting Falcons (2-7-1, 0-3 MASCAC), as the Buccaneers outshot Fitchburg State by a 14-7 margin for the contest (11-3 in the opening 45 minutes of play) while holding a 5-3 edge in corners. The win snapped the visitors’ three-match series winning streak, as the last triumph for the hosts’ came in 2008.
Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until next Saturday, October 6th when the Buccaneers head to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing that begins at 10:00 a.m., while Fitchburg State hosts Salve Regina in a non-league match next Thursday evening in Fitchburg, Mass. beginning at 7:00 p.m.
