Football: Buccaneers Fall To Western Connecticut State In Conference Play

Buzzards Bay, MA - On Saturday, the Buccaneers hosted the Western Connecticut State Wolves for a MASCAC matchup. Maritime came into the game at 3-3, 3-1 in conference play, while the Wolves were 4-3, 3-2 in conference.

The game opened with Mass Maritime recovering a Logan Tsika onside kick. Sophomore linebacker Thomas Garland was the one who recovered it. The Buccaneers drove down and capped off an 11 play drive with an 18 yard, Mike Epifano field goal at 8:19. After the two squads exchanged punts, West Conn went on a 6 play, 48 yard drive that was capped off with a 21 yard Dennis Riordan touchdown to Julian Ferguson on 4th and 19 with 1:20 left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Epifano and the Buccaneers lined up for a 42 yard field goal that hit the crossbar and bounced out. The score remained at 7-3. Following a few swaps of possession, the Wolves went back on the attack. Riordan led them on an 8 play, 68 yard drive that concluded with a 17 yard touchdown pass to Ferguson; his second of the game. The score was now 14-3.

After an unsuccessful offensive drive, the Buccaneers gave the ball back to the Wolves who capitalized with a 3 yard touchdown pass. Michael Matich hit Chad Blaszky on a goal line jump pass with only 26 seconds remaining in the half. As the two teams went into the locker room, the score stood at 21-3 in West Conn's favor.

The second half lacked scoring as the only points came from a Western Connecticut fourth quarter field. To conclude a 14 play, 58 yard drive, Anthony Weidtman knocked down a 40 yard field goal to make the score 24-3. Western Connecticut would go on to win the game 24-3 to move to 5-3, 4-2 in the conference. The Buccaneers drop below .500 at 3-4 and move to 3-2 in the conference.

Buccaneers senior quarterback and captain Marc Murphy went 14-25 with 144 passing yards and an interception. Sophomore tight end Declan Van Nest had 1 catch for 45 yards to go with senior receiver Evan Dyer, who caught 5 passes for 37 yards. Freshman kicker Mike Epifano went 1-2 on field goals as he knocked down an 18 yard field goal. Punter Jack Mulligan punted 7 times for an average of 37.6 yards with two inside the 20.

Defensively, junior linebacker Hunter Lassere tallied 7 tackles with 1 sack. Senior defensive end and captain Hugh Wells made 6 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 tackles for loss. Defensive tackle Chris O'Brien and safety Andrew Longwater both had 6 tackles and junior safety Kevin Paul recorded an interception.

Next week, the Buccaneers travel north to play against Framingham State for the Kelley Cup and look to improve to 4-4 on the year.
