Football: Buccaneers Fall Short in Pursuit of Third Straight Chowder Bowl Victory

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. -- To open up the 2022 season, the Buccaneers traveled to Throggs Neck, NY to square off against the New York Maritime Privateers in the Chowder Bowl. The Buccaneers started the game with the ball, but punted to the Privateers. After a few back and forth series, SUNY kicker Michael Trupiano hit a 32 yard field goal with 2:54 left in the first quarter.

Mass Maritime quickly answered after senior running back Ja'iel Johnson Johnson ran in a 1 yard touchdown which was set up after junior receiver Andrew Brightman caught a 41 yard pass. Just a few moments later, the Buccaneers had the ball back and we're looking to strike. Senior quarterback Marc Murphy threw his first career touchdown pass as he delivered a 20 yard strike to sophomore tight end Declan Van Nest with 8:52 left in the second quarter.

When the third quarter rolled around, SUNY Maritimes offense got into a rhythm as they went on a 5 play 55 yard drive that was capped off by a 10 yard Tate Neiderer touchdown. The drive was set up by an interception from Dru Stephens. Leading into the fourth quarter, the score was 14-10 in favor of the Buccaneers. With 8 minutes left in the game, freshman defensive end Mac Kromenhoek forced a fumble and junior defensive end Stephen McBrine recovered it. Unfortunately, the Bucs offense was unable to reach pay dirt.

With only 3:15 seconds left, the Privateers took their first lead of the game since the first quarter when Steven Stassi threw a 21 yard touchdown to Ian Derda. On the Buccaneers final drive, they picked up a first down on a crucial third and long, but could not find the end zone and turned the ball over on downs with under two minutes remaining. SUNY picked up a first down and then kneeled out the clock to take home the Chowder Bowl.

Quarterback Marc Murphy passed for 145 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. His top target was Andrew Brightman with 2 catches and 59 yards. In the backfield, MMA had a nice 1-2 punch as Ja'iel Johnson rushed for 62 yards and 1 score and Jonah Mitchell rushed for 64 yards. Defensively, sophomore safety Liam Hines made 9 tackles and sophomore linebacker Thomas Garland tallied 4 tackles, 1 TFL, and 1 sack.

The Buccaneers square off next week at home against Anna Maria for their homecoming game on Saturday, September 17th at 1pm.
