Massachusetts Maritime Academy Foundation Award

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Our next award this week is the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Foundation Award. This award was established in 1997 and is presented annually to a senior student-athlete who best exemplified the spirit and philosophy of Division III athletics.

The winner of this year's Foundation award is women's lacrosse player, Casey Sullivan. A four-year member of the women's lacrosse team and a Facilities Engineering major, Sullivan has been an integral part of the women's lacrosse program from day one. In four seasons, including two shortened seasons, Casey played in all 40 possible games in her career and started in 39 of them. She netted 124 goals, assisted on 39 other goals, picked up 110 ground balls, has 94 draw controls, 41 caused turnovers and a career 84.0 shots on goal percentage. In her freshman campaign, the midfielder from Sagamore Beach netted 50 goals and had seven assists. Her performance earned her MASCAC Rookie of the Year honors that season. In 2019, Sullivan's best season and the team's best season, she scored a career-high 52 goals, and had career-highs in assists, 23, free position goals scored, 10, ground balls, 51, and caused turnovers, 22.

Casey has undoubtedly left an incredible mark on the young Buccaneer women's lacrosse program. As she leaves the Academy she is the second all-time leading scorer (123 goals) in program history, fourth all-time in assists (39), second all-time in points (163), third all-time in draw controls (94) and seventh all-time in groundballs (110) and caused turnovers (41).

In terms of single-season marks, Sullivan is first and second in program history for goals scored in a season (52 & 50), tied for second for most assists in a season (23), and has the second and fourth most points in a single season (75 & 54). She also holds the program record for most goals in a single game with nine against MCLA in 2018.

"Casey has been an integral part of the growth of our program since her freshman season when she was named MASCAC Rookie of the Year," said head women's lacrosse coach, and 1978 Academy graduate, Marc Palombo. "Massachusetts Maritime Academy runs in her blood as the daughter of an Alum and she certainly carried on his legacy here on and off the field. Her quiet and inclusive style of leadership will be difficult to replace but we are so excited and proud to see what she does in this next chapter of her life," added Palombo.

Congratulations to women's lacrosse player, Casey Sullivan on winning the 2020 Massachusetts Maritime Academy Foundation Award.
