Burbank, Piche Lead Women's Cross Country To Seventh Place Finish At 27th Annual MASCAC Championships

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The Massachusetts Maritime men placed sixth, while the Buccaneer women’s squad posted a seventh place performance at the 2011 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships that took place as part of the 15th Annual New England Alliance Championships on Saturday afternoon on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Freshman William Brady (Woburn, Mass.) paced Massachusetts Maritime on the men’s side by placing 34th individually over the 8K layout with a time of 28:46, while sophomore Steven Migridichian (Shrewsbury, Mass.) followed in 38th place with a time of 28:58. Freshman Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) and sophomore Kevin Griffin (Stoneham, Mass.) were next for the Buccaneers in 43rd and 44th place, respectively, with times of 29:21 and 29:22, while freshman Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) closed out the scoring in 47th place with a time of 29:32, as Massachusetts Maritime was one point out of the fifth place team position and just 18 points in back of fourth place Salem State. Westfield State reclaimed the MASCAC title in the 41st Annual conference championship by edging defending champion Bridgewater State by six points (39-45) in the rain-soaked competition.
Senior Emily Burbank (Yarmouthport, Mass.) closed out her career on the women’s side for the Buccaneers by placing 32nd individually with a time of 21:47 over the 5K layout, while sophomore Jenelle Piche (Coventry, R.I.) followed in 50th place with a time of 22:42. Junior Corinne Prado (Raynham, Mass.) was next in 57th place with a time of 23:18, while sophomore Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) and junior Kaylin Korejwa (Charlotte, Vt.) rounded out the Massachusetts Maritime scoring by placing 61st and 64th, respectively, with times of 23:51 and 24:26 in rain-swept conditions. Westfield State captured its eighth straight MASCAC crown and 12th title in the last 14 years in the 27th Annual conference championship with a 28-point victory (23-51) over runner-up Worcester State.
The Buccaneer men’s squad will close out its 2011 season in two weeks by heading to Brunswick, Maine to compete at the 2011 NCAA New England Regional Championships on Saturday, November 12th beginning at 11:00 a.m.
