Burbank, Leonardi Lead Women's Cross Country To Solid 16th Place Finish At Gordon Pop Crowell Invitational

WENHAM, Mass. -- Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams posted solid top-16 team finishes on Saturday morning at the Gordon Pop Crowell Invitational, as the Buccaneer men placed 13th of 22 entrants and the Buccaneer women finished 16th of 26 teams in the competition.
Freshman William Brady (Woburn, Mass.) led the way on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime by placing 75th individually with a time of 30:08 over the 8K layout, while sophomores Steven Migridichian (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Kevin Griffin (Stoneham, Mass.) followed in 93th and 95th place, respectively, with times of 30:57 and 30:58. Junior Evan Balderelli (Brimfield, Mass.) and freshman Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring by placing 100th and 102nd, respectively, with times of 31:09 and 31:12. Southern Maine topped Johnson & Wales by five points to take the men’s team crown in the event, while Roger Williams finished in third place.
Senior Emily Burbank (Yarmouthport, Mass.) paced Massachusetts Maritime on the women’s side by covering the 5K layout in a time of 21:20 that was good for 65th place individually, while sophomores Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) and Jenelle Piche (Coventry, R.I.) followed in 121st and 134th place, respectively, with times of 23:00 and 23:20. Freshman Tenley Gillett (Manchester, N.H.) and junior Corinne Prado (Raynham, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring 151st and 166th, respectively, with times of 23:45 and 24:14. Saint Anselm and Salve Regina tied for top teams honors in the event with 56 points each, while the University of New England finished in third place.
The Massachusetts Maritime women’s squad travels to Westfield, Mass. next Saturday morning to participate in the Westfield State James Early Invitational that begins at 11:00 a.m., while the Buccaneer men’s squad will be idle until Friday, October 14th when Massachusetts Maritime heads to Boston to participate in the Emmanuel Saints Invitational at Franklin Park beginning at 4:00 p.m.
