THROGGS NECK, N.Y. --  Sophomore Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, Colo.) registered five kills, five service aces and three digs to lead Maine Maritime to a 3-0 non-league college volleyball victory over Massachusetts Maritime and the tournament title of the Second Annual Maritime Classic Sunday morning at New York Maritime’s Riesenberg Gymnasium.

Maine Maritime (10-1), which finished 3-0 in the round robin tournament, also received five kills and three service aces from sophomore Ariel Knights (Brookton, Maine) to go with seven set assists and four service aces from junior Jennifer Dixon (Woodstock, Md.) in posting a 25-4, 25-9, 25-7 triumph over the Buccaneers (0-12), who received two kills from sophomore Kelsey Pelletier (Bristol, Conn.) as well as five digs each from freshmen Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) and Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.).

Massachusetts Maritime dropped a 3-0 non-league decision to Merchant Marine in its final match of the tournament, as Kings Point’s Mariners (5-4) claimed a 25-11, 25-11, 25-5 decision over the Buccaneers.  Freshman Sara Ellenberger (Phoenix, Ariz.) notched seven kills for Merchant Marine, which also received seven digs, six kills and six service aces from freshman Cassandra Palma (Loomis, Calif.) and a combined 21 set assists from freshmen Miranda Walz (Monona, Iowa) and Paige Queen (Colorado Springs, Colo.).

Junior Alex Burgess-Chrost (Leominster, Mass.) recorded a pair of kills and seven digs in the setback to Merchant Marine for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received seven digs from Langley as well as five digs each from Weir and sophomore Ashley Button (Southfield, Mass.).

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Buccaneers travel to Leicester, Mass. to take on Becker and Bay Path in a non-league tri-match that begins at 1:00 p.m.  Maine Maritime heads to Machias, Maine on Wednesday evening for a non-league outing with Maine-Machias that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Merchant Marine will travel to Newburgh, N.Y. on Tuesday evening to take on Mount St. Mary in a non-league match that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
