Erica Overstreet of Bridgewater has made an immediate contribution to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy women’s lacrosse team.

The freshman ranks third on the Buccaneers with 14 goals and is tied for second with 19 points, helping Mass. Maritime get off to a 4-3 start.

Overstreet, a 2015 Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School graduate, is the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference rookie of the week.  The midfielder has scored in six of the seven games and has recorded three straight hat tricks.

“She’s been phenomenal,” said Mass. Maritime coach Leslie Bushy.  “I knew that she was going to be valuable all over the field.  We’ve definitely struggled in the midfield in the past, so I knew that in her experience of playing defense and offense that we were going to have a great asset in her.

“She has been a great addition to the team.  She fit right in.  She’s showed valuable leadership on the field, which has been great to see from a coach’s point of view.”

Overstreet opened her career with two goals against Maritime of New York, had a goal and an assist against Maine Maritime and two goals and an assist against Coast Guard.

After going scoreless against Simmons, Overstreet registered her first career hat trick with two assists against Wentworth and added three goals and an assist against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Overstreet had three more goals Thursday night in a 12-10 loss at Becker.

“She’s got a great shot,” said Bushy.  “She places her shots very well.  She’s picked up on how our attack and our defense are, so she’s fit right in.

“We’ve been working on some things with her, like shot placement, and she is already showing vast improvement one month into our season.  She can go pretty far.  We have a pretty young team, so she’s going to be a huge asset going forward.”

Overstreet, who was a captain at B-R last season, has a homecoming Saturday at 6 p.m. when Mass. Maritime visits Bridgewater State University for a MASCAC game at Swenson Field.
