BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --  Freshman Breanna Shaffer (Plainville, Mass.) rapped out 10 hits and drove in nine runs to lead Bridgewater State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 27-0 in the opener and 21-1 in the nightcap in five inning games played Thursday afternoon at Alumni Park.

The host Bears (25-11, 12-0 MASCAC) clinched the conference regular season crown by scoring eight runs in each of their first at-bats of the twinbill, as sophomore Sheila O’Sullivan (Westwood, Mass.) and freshmen Lindsey Musco (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Morgan Cox (Dennisport, Mass.) each added six hits on the day for Bridgewater State, which also received five hits and four RBI from junior Jocelyn Bettencourt (Plymouth, Mass.).

Freshman Kathleen Bailey (Bayport, N.Y.) tossed a perfect game to earn her second win of the season in the opener for the Bears, as she recorded nine of her 15 outs via strikeout, while fellow freshman Kelly McCarthy (Burlington, Mass.) earned her first collegiate victory in the nightcap for the hosts, fanning five over three innings while allowing just one hit.

The visiting Buccaneers (0-18, 0-12 MASCAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in their opening at-bat of the nightcap when sophomore Cassie Swanson (Quincy, Mass.) reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a two-out passed ball, as she also rapped out a double in the second contest for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received singles off the bats of senior Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) and sophomore Brittany Driscoll (Sutton, Mass.).  Swanson suffered the setback inside the circle in the opener for the visitors, while freshman Cassidy Nice (Carver, Mass.) went the distance in the nightcap.
