Sherman Raps Out Single As Softball Drops MASCAC Twinbill Decision At Fitchburg State

GAME #2 FINAL:                 FITCHBURG STATE 17, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 0 (5 INNINGS)

 

FITCHBURG, Mass. --  Senior Kerry Alcott (Groton, Mass.) tossed a five inning no-hitter and struck out 13 to lead Fitchburg State to a 17-0 nightcap victory and a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Coolidge Park, as the Falcons took the opener by an 8-0 five inning final.

 

Freshman Courtney Borysewicz (Quaker Hill, Conn.) rapped out three hits and drove in six runs in the second game triumph for the host Falcons (11-9, 5-1 MASCAC), who jumped out to a 9-0 lead in their first at-bat of the contest.  Freshman Jessalynne Brown (Malden, Mass.) added two hits and three RBI for Fitchburg State, which also received two hits and two RBI each from junior Marissa Binnall (Fitchburg, Mass.) and sophomore Judith Valentin (Brockton, Mass.) in support of Alcott, who improved to 5-3 on the season with the no-hitter.  Freshman Cassidy Nice (Carver, Mass.) suffered the setback inside the circle for the visiting Buccaneers (0-10, 0-6 MASCAC).

 

Junior Colleen Flaherty (Stoughton, Mass.) and sophomore Marissa Gemma (Leominster, Mass.) each had two hits and an RBI in the opening game victory for the Falcons, as freshman Terri Ferrazzani (North Reading, Mass.) allowed a lead-off single to Massachusetts Maritime senior Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) but retired 16 of the final 17 batters she faced while fanning nine to improve to 3-2 on the season.  Sophomore Cassie Swanson (Quincy, Mass.) went the distance inside the circle for the visitors, striking out three along the way.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Fitchburg State travels to Worcester, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to square off with Worcester State in a MASCAC twinbill that begins at 5:00 p.m.
