Calvert Scores Late to Rescue a Point from Lancers, Propels Bucs to Playoffs
WORCESTER, Mass -- Needing a win or a draw and an MCLA loss to earn their spot in the MASCAC playoffs next week, the Buccaneers men's soccer team took on Worcester State Saturday afternoon and despite being down 3-1 in the second half, the Bucs rescued the draw thanks to goals from Ryan Soughou and Brody Calvert in the final 30 minutes to draw 3-3. MCLA went on to lose at the hands of Bridgewater State propelling the Bucs into the sixth seed for the playoffs.

How It Happened
Hawkins scored early for the Lancers with his first of two scores in the 12th minute. Then, in the 26th minute, Verby scored to give the Lancers a commanding 2-0 lead. Maritime struck back in the 37th minute with a goal from O'Neil, his second of the season, on a pass from Calvert to cut the deficit to one goal, 2-1. Hawkins scored his second from the kickoff immediately after the Maritime goal to grow the lead back to two goals, 3-1. Worcester carried that lead into the half.
In the second half, the Buccaneers defense buckled down and the offense took over. After 17 minutes of play in the half, Soughou netted the team's second goal of the game, his second of the season, to get back within one score, 3-2. The Buccaneers continued to battle back, keeping the ball in the attacking zone for much of the half. With the clock winding down, Calvert played hero, scoring his conference leading eighth goal of the season in the 88th minute to bring the match to a 3-3 draw. Maritime hung on for the final two minutes and left Worcester with a point. After checking the scoreboard and seeing MCLA lose to Bridgewater, they knew they had earned a spot in the MASCAC Playoffs next week having beaten the Trailblazers earlier in the season.

Maritime will travel to #3 Fitchburg State on Tuesday, November 5th for the opening round of the MASCAC Playoffs. The start time of the match is to be announced.
