Buc Ball Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader over Falcons

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- After losing the opening game of the three-game MASCAC series to Fitchburg State on Friday, the Buccaneers bounced back on Sunday with a sweep of the Falcons to take the series two games to one. In the process, Hunter Dean struck out nine hitters, and Brett Velzis hit his third-career grand slam.

 

Game One

How It Happened

The Falcons scored their two runs in the game in the top of the first and the top of the second. Abt hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the first to score the first run, and Koza hit a solo home run in the second to put the Falcons up 2-0 through two.

It wasn't until the bottom of the third that the Buccaneers broke the game open. First came the grand slam from Velzis, the third of his career, and fourth home run of the season to give the Buccaneers a 4-2 lead. Later in the inning, Logiudice knocked in Estrada to put the Bucs up 5-2.

Maritime added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-RBI single off the bat of Velzis. The Bucs led 7-2 after four.

In the fifth, Cole hit an infield single that allowed Logiudice to score, and the Bucs went up 8-2.

Dean shut down the Falcons the rest of the way to pick up his fourth win of the season and the 8-2 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

  • Jacob Hurrell and Nolan Hills recorded two hits in the loss. Adam Koza and Maxwell Riordan had one.
  • Hills, and Riordan scored the two runs in the game.

How It Happened

Huffman was on point for the Buccaneers, allowing no runs in his five innings of work. Behind him, the Buccaneers scored six runs during his outing. In the bottom of the second, they scored their first three runs with the first coming across on a bases-loaded walk of Weir. Vieira followed that up with a two-RBI single to make the score 3-0.

Then, in the bottom of the fourth, the Bucs scored three more. Cole hit an RBI single to left, Vieira walked with the bases loaded, and Velzis hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-0 Buccaneers after four.

After a scoreless fifth, the Falcons finally got on the board in the top of the sixth. A Buccaneers miscue allowed to runs to score to cut the Maritime lead to four runs, 6-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Loughren singled in Vieira to extend the lead back to five runs, 7-2.

Nick Iannone and Sam Wolley pitched the sixth and seventh, respectively, and held the lead for the Bucs. Maritime went on to win 7-2 to sweep the doubleheader and win the conference series over the Falcons.
