Huffman and Baiardi Outstanding in Bucs Sweep of Raiders

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Buc Baseball welcomes Rivier University to town on Sunday for a non-conference doubleheader at Hendy Field. Maritime, looking to right the ship did just that with two terrific pitching performances from senior starting pitchers Sam Huffman and Brenden Baiardi. The Buccaneers won game one 5-2, and took game two 7-3.

 

Game One

The Basics

  • Jacob Boudreau and Owen Medlock had the only hits of the game for Rivier. 
  • Jayce Martinex recorded an RBI.
  • Boudreau and Luis Tejada scored the two runs in the loss. 
  • Medlock had a double, the only extra-base hit in the game for the Raiders.
  • Boudreau and Medlock had stolen bases.

 

How It Happened 

The Buccaneers scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Loughren singled to drive in Pietrafesa, giving the Bucs a 1-0 lead. 

After a quiet second inning, and no runs in the third from Rivier, Velzis extended the Buccaneers lead to 3-0 with his first home run of the season driving in himself and Vieira. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Cole doubled to score White and Houston and the Buccaneers led, 5-0. That was all the scoring the Bucs would do, and need to do, as the Rivier bullpen shut them down the rest of the way.

Rivier finally got on the board in the top of the sixth when Medlock stole second allowing Boudreau to score from third and the Raiders trailed 5-1 after six.

The Raiders scored again in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2 but they couldn't close the gap anymore are the Bucs took game one by the 5-2 final.

Maritime

  • AJ PietrafesaMichael Logiudice, and Aidan Weir all had two hits in the win.
  • Aaron ColeEvan VieiraBrett Velzis, and Colsen Loughren each had one hit.
  • Pietrafesa and Weir drove in two runs with Cole, Velzis, and Logiudice driving in a run apiece.
  • Logiudice scored twice, Cole, Vieira, Velzis, Loughren, and Costa Beechin all scored once.
  • Velzis hit his second home run of the day in the game and Cole, Pietrafesa, Loughren, Logiudice, and Weir all had doubles.
  • Cole stole the only base in the win for Maritime.

Rivier

  • Nathan Innerfield had two hits for the Raiders. Jacob Boudreau and JD Normand had one hit.
  • Normand drove in two runs and Innerfield had an RBI.
  • Boudreau, Liam Stott, and Normand all scored once.
  • Normand had a two-run home run in the game and Innerfield recorded two doubles.

 

How It Happened

Baiardi was perfect for the Buccaneers through three innings which gave his offense some time to rack up the runs. Maritime scored in the bottom of the second, first on a Logiudice double that scored Loughren. Weir followed that up with a double of his own to bring in Beechin and Logiudice to give the Bucs a 3-0 advantage after two innings.

In the bottom of the third, Velzis hit his second long ball of the day to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the top of the fourth, Boudreau got to Baiardi for the Raiders first hit of the game and Innerfield followed suit doubling to right and driving in Boudreau to cut the deficit to three runs, 4-1. The Bucs got the run back and then some in the bottom of the fourth frame with Cole hitting a ground-rule double to right center to drive in Logiudice and then Pietrafesa doubled as well bringing in Cole and Vieira. Maritime led, 7-1, after four innings.

The fifth and sixth innings went to the defenses with no runs scoring. In the seventh, the Raiders got a couple of runs back on Normand's two-run home run but that's where the comeback attempt ended. The Bucs took game two and the sweep of the Raiders with a 7-3 win in the second game.

The Buccaneers will be back home on Tuesday, March 18th to take on Gordon College at 4pm.
