Estrada, Velzis, and Loughren go Yard in Win over Dean

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Bucs baseball scored eight runs in the first inning of their game against Dean on Tuesday en route to a 15-3 win over the Bulldogs at Hendy Field.

Inside the Numbers

Maritime

  • Aaron Cole had three hits in the game, including a triple and a double in the first inning.
  • Colsen Loughren had two hits, and Aj PietrafesaBrett VelzisMichael EstradaMichael Logiudice, and Aidan Weir each had a hit.
  • Estrada drove in five runs, four of which were on his first-career grand slam in the first inning. Cole, Velzis, and Loughren all had three RBI.
  • Velzis scored three times in the game with Pietrafesa, and Evan Vieira scored twice. Eight other Bucs scored once.

How It Happened

Maritime scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a commanding lead. Velzis drove in the first run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Estrada came up two hitters later and hit his first-career grand slam. Then, in his second at-bat of the inning, Cole doubled with the bases loaded and drove in all three runners. The Bucs led 8-0 after one inning of play.

After two scoreless innings, the Bulldogs found their way onto the scoreboard, getting a run in the top of the fourth inning on a Cavas single to make the score 8-1. In the bottom of the inning, the Buccaneers added two runs on Velzis's third homer of the season and took a 10-1 lead.

The Bucs added three more in the bottom of the fifth on Loughren's first home run and went up 13-1 after five.

In the top of the sixth, Dean scraped another run across the plate when Favate singled to left field to make it a 13-2 game.

Maritime scored two more in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk to take a 15-2 lead after seven.

In the top of the ninth, Dean got one more run on a sacrifice fly. The Bucs finished off the innings after the run and went above .500 for the first time this season at 8-7 with the 15-3 victory.

 

What's Next

The Bucs open conference play this weekend against Westfield State. The three-game series opens up on Friday with the Owls coming to Buzzards Bay for a 4pm first pitch.
