BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Emmanuel College placed all five of its scorers in the top 12 to earn the team championship of the Sixth Annual Massachusetts Maritime Lt. Travis J. Fuller Women’s Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning alongside Cape Cod Canal on campus.
The Saints posted a team score of 40 points in the competition, outdistancing runner-up Emerson and third-place Merchant Marine’s totals of 62 and 107 points, respectively. Mount Ida and Framingham State placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with team scores of 128 and 144 points, while New York Maritime (147 points), Suffolk (222 points) and host Massachusetts Maritime (225 points) followed in sixth, seventh and eighth places, respectively. Newbury (232 points), Curry (252 points), Rivier (259 points) and Eastern Nazarene (276 points) rounded out the team scoring in places nine through 12, respectively, in the competition.
Merchant Marine sophomore Gretchen Holoubek (Severna Park, Md.) took top individual honors on the day, as she covered the three mile layout in a time of 19:03, outdistancing Emerson sophomore Heather Hoglund’s (Groton, Mass.) runner-up time of 19:22. Sophomore Joslyn Del Signore (Taunton, Mass.), senior Alison Lynch (Pawtucket, R.I.) and freshman Danielle Martin (York, Maine) placed third, seventh and 10th, respectively, for team champion Emmanuel, while Framingham State’s Katherine Anderson and UMass Boston freshman Heather Lucas finished fourth and fifth, respectively. New York Maritime sophomore Jackie Bellisari (Albertson, N.Y.) placed sixth individually, while Newbury sophomore Solange Thomas (Webster, Mass.) and Emerson sophomore Courtney Carter (Hudson, N.H.) rounded out the top 10 by finishing eighth and ninth, respectively, in the competition.
Freshman Elizabeth Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) was the top individual performer on the day for Massachusetts Maritime, as she placed 22nd with a time of 21:26 in her collegiate debut, while sophomore Sophie Enman (Marblehead, Mass.) was next in 50th place with a time of 23:07. Junior Julie Shebroe (Little Falls, N.J.) and freshman Lauren Bateman (Newbury, Mass.) were next in 67th and 71st place, respectively, with times of 24:19 and 24:29, while junior Samantha Foley (Forestdale, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring in 74th place with a time of 25:24.
The Buccaneers return to action next Saturday morning by heading to North Dartmouth, Mass. to participate in the UMass Dartmouth Buddy Harris Invitational that begins at 11:15 a.m.
