Franklin Park, Boston, Mass.

BOSTON, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime men’s cross country posted a strong 10th place team finish among 20 collegiate squads competing at the 43rd Annual Codfish Bowl Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park, while the Buccaneer women’s team recorded strong individual finishes in placing 21st among collegiate teams in the final standings.

Freshman James Murray (Westfield, Mass.) paced the Massachusetts Maritime men by placing 34th individually over the 8K layout in a time of 27:31, while freshman Brent Schouler (Hyannis, Mass.) and senior Patrick Dannaher (Arlington, Va.) followed in 85th and 89th place, respectively, with times of 28:44 and 28:50.  Freshmen Steven Migridichian (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Kevin Griffin (Stoneham, Mass.) rounded out the scoring by placing 172nd and 196th, respectively, with times of 31:21 and 31:59 for the Buccaneers, who finished fourth among 10 Division III entrants in the field of 287 runners.

Division II Bentley took top team honors on the men’s side, while Bates and Adelphi finished as the runner-up and third place squads, respectively.

Freshman Elizabeth Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) paced Massachusetts Maritime on the women’s side, covering the 5K course in a time of 24:10, and while senior Meredith Hall (Duxbury, Mass.) placed 153rd individually with a time of 24:16, she gave up her time and place mid-race to tend to a competitor who was experiencing breathing difficulties and displayed the signs of an allergic reaction.  Hall stayed with the competitor until she knew that help was on the way.

“True to her EMT training, Meredith did was she was trained to do, sacrificing her time, her overall place and the team’s standing to do it,” Buccaneer Head Coach Linda Letourneau said after the race.  “I can’t say enough positive things about the way she reacted and handled a difficult situation.”

Sophomore Sophie Enman (Marblehead, Mass.) was next for Massachusetts Maritime in 212nd place with a time of 26:32, while freshman Lauren Bateman (Newbury, Mass.) and sophomore Anna Whittemore (Weatogue, Conn.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring by placing 221st and 226th, respectively, with times of 27:29 and 28:37.

Bates took top team honors on the women’s side, while Bentley and Coast Guard followed as the runner-up and third place squads, respectively.

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads will travel to Wenham, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete in the Gordon Pop Crowell Invitational that begins at 10:00 a.m.
