GAME #2 FINAL:                 SALEM STATE 8, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 0 (5 INNINGS)

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Rebecca Krigman (Malden, Mass.) and sophomore Jess Raymond (Peabody, Mass.) each rapped out four hits and drove in three runs to lead Salem State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Sunday afternoon by finals of 14-1 in the opener and 8-0 in the nightcap in a pair of five inning contests played at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Vikings (13-9, 3-1 MASCAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opener and used a seven run third inning rally to take control of the contest, as Raymond and sophomore Katelyn Doherty (Tewksbury, Mass.) drove in two runs each in the lid-lifter.  All nine of Salem State’s starters had at least one hit as part of a 10-hit opening game attack in support of freshman Rachael Cyr (Amesbury, Mass.), who scattered three hits and fanned six in going the distance to improve to 3-2 on the season.  The host Buccaneers (0-6, 0-6 MASCAC) plated their lone run of the day in the bottom of the third, as freshman Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) singled and later scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of freshman Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.).  Freshmen Sarah Monteiro (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Angela Nikituk (Otis, Mass.) also singled in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as Thomas allowed just two earned runs and struck out a pair to fall to 0-3 on the spring.

Freshman Jen Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) sparked a five-run opening inning rally for the Vikings in the nightcap with a three-run homer (the first of her career), and Salem State added a run in the second before tallying twice in the fourth to close out the scoring.  Krigman collected three hits and drove in three runs for the winners, who also received two hits each from Raymond and Crovo as part of an 11-hit attack.  Sophomore Francesca Perreault (Everett, Mass.) improved to 7-4 for the visitors inside the circle by striking out three over the first two frames, as freshman Meghan Black (Winchendon, Mass.) also fanned three in relief.  Freshman Alexis Jendzejec’s (West Greenwich, R.I.) lead-off double in the first was the lone hit of the nightcap for Massachusetts Maritime, as Thomas again went the distance for the Buccaneers in recording three more strikeouts.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Salem State entertains Framingham State in a MASCAC twinbill on Tuesday afternoon in Salem, Mass. that begins at 2:00 p.m.
