O'Leary Second Half Goal Forces Overtime As Men's Soccer Drops 3-2 Extra Session Heartbreaker To Bridgewater State In MASCAC Quarterfinals

Clean Harbors Stadium, Buzzards Bay, Mass.

FINAL:              BRIDGEWATER STATE 3, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 2 (DOUBLE OVERTIME)

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshman Kane Moran’s (Attadale, Western Australia) golden goal with 5:44 remaining in the second overtime lifted fifth-seeded Bridgewater State to a 3-2 victory over fourth-seeded Massachusetts Maritime in quarterfinal round action of the 2015 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championships played Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Bears, who improve to 15-3-1 overall on the season, advance to Friday’s MASCAC semifinal round and will square off with top-seed Westfield State at Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass. beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Friday’s other semifinal match will see second-seeded Framingham State host sixth-seeded Worcester State at Maple Street Field in Framingham, Mass. beginning at 6:00 p.m., as the Lancers advanced 6-5 on penalty kicks after battling third-seeded MCLA to a 1-1 draw over 110 minutes of action in Tuesday’s other quarterfinal round contest played at Shewcraft Field in North Adams, Mass.

Moran converted a feed from senior Andrew Chenard (Kingston, Mass.) for his third tally of the season on the deciding marker for Bridgewater State, as his shot deflected in from 10 yards out.  The host Buccaneers, who end their season at 5-12 overall, grabbed the early advantage on sophomore Michael Rouette’s (Three Rivers, Mass.) second goal of the season on a direct kick from 20 yards out, and that score held up until the 56th minute of play when senior Kolin Campbell (Norton, Mass.) evened matters for the Bears with his second tally of the season (both against Massachusetts Maritime) on a cross from fellow senior Sawyer Fleck (Foxboro, Mass.).  Chenard gave the visitors a 2-1 edge in the 69th minute with his fourth marker of the fall on a cross from senior Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.), but the Buccaneers knotted matters at 2-2 just 1:21 later when sophomore Kevin O’Leary (Norton, Mass.) collected his second goal of the season on a feed from senior Nick Parker (Plymouth, Mass.).  Bridgewater State had a pair of early chances in the first overtime that were thwarted, but Moran’s late heroics in the second extra session enabled the Bears to advance.

Junior Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Bridgewater State with a five-save effort, while junior Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) made a season-high 13 saves in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime.  The Bears outshot the Buccaneers by a 23-10 margin overall (16-7 on goal) and took five of the eight corner kicks for the contest, as the two teams met exactly 14 years to the day of their first-ever post-season match-up back in 2004, which Bridgewater State claimed by a 2-0 margin.

Massachusetts Maritime made its third straight post-season appearance under 23rd-year Head Coach Greg Perry, marking the longest such streak in program history.
