BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Adam Niden (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Bo Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 7-2 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The visiting Corsairs (8-3) jumped out to a 3-0 first quarter lead on the strength of Prozinski’s two tallies as well as a marker by sophomore Tyler Prentice (Chelmsford, Mass.), and Niden’s man-up goal 39 seconds into the second stanza extended that margin to 4-0. Junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) sliced the host Buccaneers’ (7-4) deficit to three at the break with a second quarter score, and freshman Ryan McNeill’s (Burlington, Mass.) marker with 5:16 to play in the third quarter enabled Massachusetts Maritime to close to within a pair at 4-2. UMass Dartmouth iced its triumph with three goals in the final 4:58 of action, as Niden’s second man-up goal sandwiched tallies from senior Justin Lawless (Quincy, Mass.) and freshman Sean Peters (Medway, Mass.) to account for the final score.
Senior Todd Davis (Sandwich, Mass.) added two assists on the night for the Corsairs in support of senior goalie Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, Mass.), who made seven saves to earn his eighth win of the season for the visitors. Sophomore Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) chipped in with an assist in the setback for the Buccaneers, as senior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made five first half saves in net for the hosts, who received eight second half stops from freshman Keison Cunningham (Weymouth, Mass.). UMass Dartmouth outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 38-21 margin (20-9 on goal) and held an 11-2 advantage in faceoffs for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts 13th-ranked Springfield in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m., while UMass Dartmouth entertains Southern Maine in a Little East Conference outing in North Dartmouth, Mass. on Saturday afternoon that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
