FINAL:              MIT 8, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 6

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --  Freshman Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 2:45 remaining, and added two assists for four points as MIT rallied from a four-goal fourth quarter deficit to notch an 8-6 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Roberts Field.

The host Engineers (9-7, 4-2 NEWMAC) trailed by a 6-2 margin heading into the final 15 minutes of play, but a pair of goals by sophomore Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) that sandwiched freshman Michael Traub’s (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) marker in the opening 9:15 of the frame enabled MIT to close back to within one.  Stolzenberg evened matters for the hosts with 4:25 remaining before providing the deciding tally just 2:20 later, and sophomore Graham Francis’s (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) goal with nine seconds remaining iced the Engineers’ triumph and capped the comeback.

The visiting Buccaneers (7-8, 1-5 NEWMAC) took a 1-0 first quarter lead on sophomore Anthony Kurylak’s (Exeter, N.H.) goal 2:33 into the contest, and Massachusetts Maritime extended that margin to 2-0 with 9:03 to play in the half on freshman Ryan McNeill’s (Burlington, Mass.) marker.  Orrson sliced MIT’s deficit in half heading into the break with a score just 2:26 later, and Francis evened matters for the Engineers 4:47 after intermission on an Orrson feed.  Sophomore Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) sparked a four-goal Buccaneer run with a pair of tallies in a 56 second span, and markers by junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore C.J. Hanson (Melrose, Mass.) in the final 5:56 of the third stanza increased the visitors’ advantage to four, setting up MIT’s fourth quarter heroics.

Orrson finished with a hat trick and two assists for five points for the Engineers, as sophomore Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) picked up the win in goal with a six-save effort for the hosts.  Freshmen Sam Jarvis (Laurel Springs, N.J.) and Andrew Lawrence (Reading, Mass.) notched assists in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Keison Cunningham (Weymouth, Mass.) made six second half saves in net for the visitors.  Senior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) stopped five of the six shots he faced in the opening 30 minutes of play for the Buccaneers, as MIT outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 33-30 margin for the contest.

MIT is seeded third in next week’s New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference championships and will travel to second-seeded Babson for a semifinal round match on Wednesday in Babson Park, Mass.  Massachusetts Maritime concludes the season after reaching the seven-win plateau for the second time in three years.
