Gratzer, Leonardi Pace Impressive Performances For Outdoor Track & Field At Tufts Snowflake Classic

MEDFORD, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team continued to impress in the early stages of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Tufts Snowflake Classic, as the Buccaneer men placed 15th overall while the women’s squad posted four points in the field of 24 teams entered in the competition.

 

Juniors Robert Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) and Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) notched fifth place performances in their respective events to lead Massachusetts Maritime, as Gratzer posted a mark of 44.61 meters in the discus while Leonardi finished fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 14:30.90.  Senior Tom Turner (Westmoreland, N.H.) added a sixth place finish in the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 15:44.31, while sophomore Tim Lawler (Newburyport, Mass.) posted a ninth place performance in the javelin with a mark of 47.45 meters.

 

Senior Evan Balderelli (Brimfield, Mass.) notched a 10th place finish in the 400 meter high hurdles for the Buccaneers with a time of 1:01.05, and he teamed up with sophomores Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.), E.J. Bennett (East Wareham, Mass.) and Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) to place sixth in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 3:33.25.

 

Northeastern took top honors on the men’s side with a score of 110 points, while host Tufts captured the women’s competition with a score of 124 points.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic beginning at 10:00 a.m.
