Bennett Records Pair Of Top Seven Finishes As Outdoor Track & Field Shines In Season Debut At Bridgewater State Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team began its 2013 season on a strong note with several solid performances at the non-scoring Bridgewater State Bears Invitational Saturday afternoon at Swenson Track.

 

Sophomore E.J. Bennett (East Wareham, Mass.) recorded a pair of top seven individual performances for the Buccaneers, as he placed fifth in the high jump (1.83 meters) and seventh in the 400 meters (52.69), while fellow sophomore Zachary Poh (Bridgewater, Mass.) notched a seventh place finish in the shot put (12.57 meters).  Bennett teamed up with senior Laurence Tagger (Bourne, Mass.), sophomore Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) and freshman Garrett Loughry (Edgewater, Fla.) for a fourth place finish in the 4 X 100 relay with a time of 45.99.

 

Tagger and senior Chris Flynn (Orange, Conn.) placed 10th in the long jump (5.49 meters) and hammer throw (35.66 meters), respectively, for Massachusetts Maritime, while Hill finished 11th in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.46) and 13th in the 110 meter hurdles (17.95).  Senior Michael Rourke (Stoneham, Mass.), junior Ted Mello (Acushnet, Mass.), sophomore Tim Lawler (Newburyport, Mass.) and freshman Peter Schultz (Wilbraham, Mass.) all recorded respective 11th place performances in the shot put (11.92 meters), triple jump (11.51 meters), javelin (47.85 meters) and long jump (5.32 meters) for the Buccaneers, while sophomore Steven O’Neil (North Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Bryce MacAndrew (Warwick, R.I.) finished 12th in the triple jump (10.65 meters) and hammer throw (34.00 meters).

 

Junior Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) set the pace on the women’s side for Massachusetts Maritime with a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (14.36.94), while fellow junior Kelci Sullivan (Hanson, Mass.) recorded a sixth place and school record performance in the 10,000 meters with a time of 44:04.85.  Sophomore Danielle Soar (Templeton, Mass.) also notched a 20th place individual finish in the javelin with a mark of 26.10 meters.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Medford, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the Tufts Snowflake Classic that begins at 10:00 a.m.
