Bucs Double Up Colonels in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass -- On Friday evening, the Buccaneers men's lacrosse team opened their season on the road against Curry College. Though they fell behind 2-0 in the first four minutes, the Bucs rallied, especially in the fourth quarter, to pick up a 10-5 victory. The win marks the first for first-year head coach Mike Smith.

On The Field

Maritime

  • Mitchell Maida and Ryan McDonough each scored three goals to lead all players. 
  • Freshman Cooper Barrett scored two goals.
  • Senior Captain Leo Allgaier and Gage Coolahan each scored once.
  • Braeden Kosiewicz recorded three assists in the win.
  • Jack Iversen, Allgaier, and McDonough were all credit with one assist for Maritime.
  • Faceoff man Brian Rosher won 11-of-17 faceoffs and picked up a team-high six ground balls.
  • Allgaier and Aidonidis each had four ground ball pickups. 
  • Jack O'Donnell caused a team-high two turnovers defensively. 
  • Maritime picked up a total of 29 ground balls, were successful on 22 of 26 clears, won 11 of 17 faceoffs and took 28 total shots in the game.

Curry

  • Nick Perfetuo and Robbie Tartaglia each scored two goals in the loss.
  • Mac Kline rounded out the scoring for the Colonels.
  • Connor Bryant recorded three assists. Perfetuo and Zach Weinstein each had one assist.
  • Jack Canto led all players in ground balls with seven. 
  • Curry picked up 35 ground balls, were successful on 17 of 22 clears, won 6 of 17 faceoffs and took 42 total shots in the loss.

 

How It Happened

Curry took a quick lead in the first with a goal 45 seconds in from Perfetuo. Three minutes later, Kline scored on a man up opportunity to give his team a 2-0 lead less than four minutes in. The Bucs struck three minutes later on a man up opportunity of their own on Maida's first of the season from McDonough. Maida scored again with 3:28 left in the quarter from Allgaier to tie the game up. The 2-2 score stood until the end of the first.

The second was the lowest scoring quarter of the game with only one goal per side. It took over 13 minutes to get the first of the period with Tartaglia scoring with 1:47 on the clock to make it 3-2 Curry. With 32 seconds left before the break, McDonough scored his first career goal to tie the game at 3-3.

Tied at three out of the half, Curry scored just over two minutes in with Perfetuo netting his second. After a nine-minute scoring hiatus, Tartaglia scored his second with 3:30 left in the third to give Curry another two-goal lead at 5-3. As was customary in the first two quarters, the Bucs scored the last goal of the third. Allgaier scored his first of the season, unassisted, with 3:12 left. Barret tied the game with one tick left on the clock in the third and the teams went to the fourth knotted at 5-5.

The fourth quarter was all Maritime as Tartaglia's score in the third would be the last goal they would score. 59 second in to the final quarter of play McDonough scored what would go on to be the game winner. A Minute later, Maida scored his third of the night to give the Bucs a two-goal lead. Coolahan scored his first at 9:54, Barret scored his second at 7:40 and McDonough put the cherry on top with a goal at 6:20 from Iversen. The Bucs went in to defensive mode, Aidonidis stood on his head and the Buccaneers picked up a well deserved 10-5 victory over the Colonels.
