BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshman Thomas Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.) and senior Jared Lowe (Brimfield, Mass.) combined on a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 5-0 nightcap victory over Lasell and a split of a non-league college baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field, as the visiting Lasers used a two-run seventh inning rally in the opener to claim a 7-6 triumph.

Sophomore Ben Maher’s (Plymouth, Mass.) RBI groundout gave the host Buccaneers (6-4) the only run they would need in the nightcap triumph, as Massachusetts Maritime extended its lead to 4-0 in the third on a bases loaded walk to sophomore Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.) that was followed by a run-scoring single off the bat of Maher and a fielder’s choice by sophomore Matt Pelletier (Bradford, Mass.).  Freshman Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) accounted for the final run of the second contests for the hosts when he scored on a wild pitch, as Notarangelo went the first four frames in scattering a pair of runs and fanning one to record his first collegiate victory.  Lowe picked up his first save of the spring in allowing two hits and striking out four over the final three innings of work for the Buccaneers, who received a pair of hits off the bat of sophomore Jonathan Moffitt (Lake Mary, Fla.) as part of an eight-hit attack.  Freshman Dan O’Boyle (Bayport, N.Y.) allowed six hits and four runs over the first two-plus innings in the nightcap setback for Lasell (5-11), as he fanned a pair in falling to 1-2 on the season.

The Lasers jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in their first at-bat in the opener on an RBI double by senior Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, Mass.), and Lasell added two runs in both the third and fourth frames to extend that lead to 5-0, as a pair of errors, coupled with a run-scoring single by junior Bobby Stachura (Middletown, Conn.), provided the third inning tallies, while an error and an RBI single off the bat of senior Matt Mahoney (Rockland, Mass.) highlighted the visitors’ fourth inning rally.  Massachusetts Maritime got a run back in the fifth on Lee’s RBI double, and the Buccaneers rallied for five runs on four hits and a pair of errors with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.  Freshman Zacary Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in the hosts’ second run with a single and scored on a subsequent error to close the gap to 5-3, and after a bunt single by Moffitt and a walk to Lee, Maher delivered a two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded to even matters at 5-5.  Junior Zachary Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.) then reached on the second error of the evening that allowed Lee to score the go-ahead run for Massachusetts Maritime, but Lasell rallied to take the lead in the top of the seventh, as Cavanagh singled and scored the tying run on an RBI single by sophomore Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.), who then scored what proved to be the winning run on a triple down the left field line off the bat of sophomore Corey Michel (Rochester, N.H.).  The Buccaneers had the tying run on second in the bottom of the inning, but Mahoney threw out sophomore pinch hitter Devin Rudolph (Carver, Mass.) stealing at third to end the game.

Mahoney, Stachura, Cavanagh, Uberti and Michel each had two hits and an RBI in the opening game victory for the Lasers, as junior Chris Pittman (Brockton, Mass.) recorded the final out of the sixth to earn the win and O’Boyle tossed a scoreless seventh to earn the save for Lasell.  Pelletier rapped out two hits in the opening game for Massachusetts Maritime, as Cooney also recorded a pair of safeties and suffered the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers in allowing the two seventh inning runs.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Tufts in a non-league outing on Wednesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Lasell hosts Framingham State in a non-league contest on Tuesday evening in Newton, Mass. beginning at 7:00 p.m.
