Hamilton Claims Top Honors As Women's Cross Country Captures First Ever Team Title At 12th Annual Travis Fuller Invitational

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshman Meaghan Hamilton (Braintree, Mass.) captured top individual honors to lead Massachusetts Maritime to its first ever team title at the 12th Annual Lt. Travis J. Fuller Women’s Cross Country Invitational that was run alongside the Cape Cod Canal Saturday morning.

 

The Buccaneers posted a team score of 43 points to outdistance runner-up Curry (52) by nine points in the final standings, while Eastern Nazarene finished third with a score of 78 points.  Newbury topped Mount Ida by four points (83-87) for fourth place overall, while Pine Manor finished sixth with a score of 172 points.  Anna Maria and Rivier did not register team scores in the event.

 

Hamilton covered the 5K layout in a time of 20:30 for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a fourth place finishing time of 22:10 from freshman Heather Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) as well as a 10th place performance from junior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) in a time of 23:37.  Sophomores Myat Smith (Sanford, Fla.) and Sara Merzon (Rockland, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneers’ team by posting respective 14th and 16th place times of 24:26 and 24:39, as senior Celeste Menard (Annandale, Va.) and freshman Jill Ethier (Portsmouth, R.I.) added top 20 times of 25:29 and 25:37 in the race.

 

Curry junior Victoria Gately (Hanson, Mass.) finished as the individual runner-up to Hamilton with a time of 20:58, as the Colonels received respective sixth and eighth place times of 22:32 and 22:45 from seniors Lydia Hixson (West Hartford, Conn.) and Emilee Purdy (Franklin, Mass.) to join Gately in the top 10.  Freshmen Karen Diaz (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Jael Bourque (Nashua, N.H.), along with senior Dezirae Maffit (Aurora, Ill.), notched respective fifth, seventh and ninth place individual performances of 22:31, 22:38 and 23:31 to lead the way for Eastern Nazarene, while Mount Ida freshman Jamie Gassman (Middletown, Conn.) rounded out the top 10 individuals with a third place time of 21:02.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Westfield, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the Westfield State James Earley Invitational that begins at 11:00 a.m.
