Leonardi Leads Way In Final Collegiate Race As Women's Cross Country Places Eighth At MASCAC Championships

GORHAM, Maine --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country squads competed for their respective Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference titles this afternoon at the 2013 New England Alliance Championships hosted by Southern Maine, as the Buccaneer men placed fifth overall while the Buccaneer women posted an eighth place finish.

 

Freshman James MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) led the way once again on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he covered the 8K layout at the Narragansett School with a time of 28:01.51.  Juniors Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) and Tyler Brady (Woburn, Mass.) were next in 25th and 38th place, respectively, with times of 28:52.87 and 29:38.55, while junior Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) and senior Steven Migridichian (Shrewsbury, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring in respective 47th and 48th place with times of 30:44.41 and 30:44.84.  Westfield State captured its 24th MASCAC crown by placing all five of its scorers in the top six to score 18 points and outdistance runner-up Fitchburg State’s total of 68 points, while defending champion Bridgewater State (99) and fourth-place finisher Worcester State (118) topped Massachusetts Maritime’s score of 124 points.

 

Senior Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) paced the Buccaneer women once again in the championship race, as she posted a time of 23:36.27 over the 5K layout to finish 51st individually.  Sophomore Dominique Dertien (Panama City, Fla.) and freshman Kylie Foster (Sandwich, Mass.) were next in respective 59th and 61st place with times of 24:25.07 and 24:42.11, while juniors Jillian Petrarca (Matunuck, R.I.) and Elise LaBonte (Weymouth, Mass.) rounded out Massachusetts Maritime’s scoring in 77th and 78th place, respectively, with times of 28:26.19 and 29:43.07.  Westfield State claimed its 10th straight and 19th overall MASCAC championship by placing all of its scorers in the top 10 positions to post 34 points, as the Owls outdistanced runner-up Bridgewater State (44) and third place Worcester State (75).

 

Today’s action concluded season competition for the Massachusetts Maritime women’s squad, while the Buccaneer men’s team returns to the Narragansett School course in two weeks to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division III New England Regionals on Saturday, November 16th beginning at Noon.
