Hunt Nets Seven Goals As Women's Lacrosse Drops 16-11 Non-League Decision To Simmons

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) netted four goals and two assists for six points to lead Simmons to a 16-11 non-league college women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

 

The visiting Sharks (2-3) overcame an early 2-1 deficit and built a pair of three-goal leads late in the first half, but the host Buccaneers (0-3) crept back to within one (8-7) at the break on junior Stephanie Hunt’s (Brookfield, Conn.) goal as time expired.  Simmons regained took a 9-7 lead 4:07 after intermission on sophomore Missie Maiewski’s (Northampton, Mass.) marker, but tallies by Hunt and sophomore Erica Overstreet (Bridgewater, Mass.) in a 53 second span enabled Massachusetts Maritime to forge a 9-9 tie with just under 23 minutes remaining in the match.  The Sharks took control of the contest with four unanswered goals over a 7:13 stretch to take a 13-9 advantage, as Giarrusso collected three goals as part of a closing 7-2 overall run that iced the visitors’ triumph.

 

Maiewski added a hat trick and an assist in the win for Simmons, which also received a pair of goals and two assists from sophomore Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.).  Freshman Kate Bowers (Belchertown, Mass.) chipped in with two tallies and a helper for the Sharks, who also two goals from freshman Kingsley Richards (Lexington, Mass.).  Sophomore Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) notched a goal and a match-high five assists on the day for the visitors, who received a marker and helper from junior Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) to go with an assist off the stick of junior Kiera Kirkaldy (Middlebury, Vt.).

 

Hunt netted a season-high seven goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of tallies and an assist from Overstreet.  Senior Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) and freshman Cammi Balentine (Haverhill, Mass.) also added markers for the Buccaneers, who received a pair of assists from senior Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) and a single helper off the stick of senior Christina Murphy (Forestdale, Mass.).

 

Sophomore Kenzie Rogers (Bourne, Mass.) picked up her second win of the season in goal with a six-save effort over 47-plus minutes of play for Simmons, who also received a pair of stops over the final 12-plus minutes of action from junior Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.).  Junior Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made 11 saves in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Sharks outshot the Buccaneers by a 34-28 margin overall (27-19 on goal) and held a 21-7 advantage in draw controls in claiming their fourth victory in as many series meetings between the two schools.

 

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until Wednesday, March 29th when the Buccaneers travel to New London, Conn. to take on Coast Guard in a non-league match beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Simmons hosts Curry in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Winsor Field in Boston that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
