FINAL:              SUNY-MARITIME 11, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 7

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. --  Sophomore Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y.) netted five goals to lead SUNY-Maritime to an 11-7 college women’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime and the championship of the First Annual Maritime Cup on Sunday morning at Reinhart Field.

The host Privateers (2-2) snapped an early 1-1 tie with five unanswered goals, including a hat trick from Quinn and a pair of tallies from junior Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y.), over the final 21:24 of the opening half to take a 6-1 advantage at the break, and markers by Quinn and freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y.) in the first 6:49 after intermission extended SUNY-Maritime’s lead to 8-1.  Goals by sophomore Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) and freshman Brianna Pingree (Mashpee, Mass.) closed the visiting Buccaneers’ (1-1) deficit to five midway through the second stanza, but Quinn extended the Privateers’ lead back to six just 2:21 later, as Massachusetts Maritime got no closer than the final four-goal margin in the closing minutes of action.

Lavelle added a hat trick and an assist to finish with four points in the win for SUNY-Maritime, which also received tallies off the sticks of juniors Elizabeth Higley (Palm City, Fla.) and Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y.).  Freshman Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) netted her first career hat trick and added a pair of assists to finish with five points in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which received a pair of goals from Solari and a single marker off the stick of sophomore Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.).

Sophomore Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for SUNY-Maritime with a nine-save effort, while senior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) suffered the setback in the Massachusetts Maritime cage with four stops in nearly 19 minutes of action.  Freshman Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made six saves over the final 40-plus minutes of play for the Buccaneers, as each team had 23 overall shots for the contest, with the Privateers holding a 21-16 edge in shots on goal.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to New London, Conn. on Thursday evening to take on rival Coast Guard in a non-league outing that begins at 7:00 p.m., while SUNY-Maritime entertains SUNY-Polytechnic in a non-league match on Thursday afternoon at Reinhart Field beginning at 5:00 p.m.
