NORTH ADAMS, Mass. --  Junior Kendra Hobbs (Haverhill, Mass.) and freshman Kendra Hinkell (North Adams, Mass.) each drove in six runs to lead MCLA to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 10-3 in the opener and 21-4 in a five inning nightcap in games played Sunday afternoon at Joe Zavattaro Field.

The host Trailblazers (4-14, 2-0 MASCAC) snapped a 3-3 deadlock in the bottom of the fifth inning of the opener on a two-run homer off the bat of freshman Sam Barbarotta (Pittsfield, Mass.), and MCLA added five tallies in the sixth, highlighted by Barbarotta’s RBI single and a fielder’s choice by Hinkell, to account for the final score.  The visiting Buccaneers (2-10, 0-2 MASCAC) grabbed an early lead in their first at bat of the lid-lifter on senior Holly McLaughlin’s (Belmont, Mass.) fielder’s choice groundout, but the Trailblazers plated single runs in the first, second and fourth frames, including a pair of RBI from senior Kayla Koumjian (Watervliet, N.Y.), to take a 3-1 cushion.  Massachusetts Maritime evened matters in the fifth on a two-run homer off the bat of junior Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.), her first of the season, setting the stage for Barbarotta’s deciding round-tripper for the hosts.

Freshman Taylor Warnock (Port Jervis, N.Y.) rapped out three hits in the opener for MCLA, which also received two hits each from Hinkell and senior Kaitland Hager (Springfield, Mass.) as well as three total RBI from Koumjian.  Senior Kelly Pirzl picked up the win with a complete-game effort inside the circle for the Trailblazers with eight strikeouts.  Thibeault, junior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.), sophomore Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) and freshman Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.) each recorded hits in the first game setback for the Buccaneers, as sophomore Jennifer March (Pawtucket, R.I.) fanned five in going the distance on the mound for the visitors.

Massachusetts Maritime again took an early one-run lead in the nightcap when Weir drew a bases-loaded walk, but MCLA took control of the contest by erupting for 16 runs in the bottom of the first, as Hinkell drove in five runs with a bases-clearing triple and a two-run single.  Hobbs and freshman Angela Perfido (Whately, Mass.) also added three-run three-baggers in the frame for the Trailblazers, who added two runs each in the second and fourth to sandwich a single tally in the fifth.  Hinkell and Warnock each had three hits for the hosts in the nightcap triumph, as Hobbs and Hinkell combined for 10 RBI and Perfido chipped in with four RBI in support of junior Ainsley MacDonald (White River Junction, Vt.), who struck out 11 in earning her third win of the season.  McLaughlin rapped out a pair of hits in the nightcap setback for the Buccaneers, as Beaulieu suffered the setback inside the circle for the visitors.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Framingham State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., while MCLA heads to Fitchburg, Mass. on Friday afternoon to square off with Fitchburg State in a MASCAC twinbill that begins at 2:00 p.m.
